Odd Question: Sharps disposal on St John?

Post by seaera »

On our way to paradise next week - yeah! :D

Our daughter is a diabetic who requires insulin shots twice a day. Does anyone on island know if there is a place (such as the pharmacy) that I can drop off her used 'sharps' (needle tips) before we leave? I really don't want to have to haul them back if I don't have to. At home, we return the container when full to the pharmacy that we fill her prescriptions at - just checking to see if it's okay to drop them at the local pharmacy while there.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi! You can try Myrah Keating Clinic on STJ 1-340-693-8900 or

If they donn't do it the hospital on ST Thomas said that they do. Good luck! Have a great trip!

I've had type 1 over 40 years and travelled a lot. You don't need an official sharps container, just a safe way to dispose so someone won't get stuck on them in the trash. You can drop them into a beverage bottle and reseal the lid then throw it away, put them into a pop can and close the top with a piece of tape, put them into an empty suntan lotion bottle and close the lid. There's nothing special about a sharps container. Any container will work. Just so there not exposed in the trash.

Deejayjay - Not all communities allow sharps to be disposed of in the trash, no matter the container they are in - they are considered hazardous waste. We don't allow it where we live but we can take them to our local fire departments for proper disposal.
