Car Ferry pricing

Post by nancyr84 »

How does the pricing for the car ferry work? Is it the same price per person as people ferry plus set charge for car?

I'm still confused . So if you are a family of 5 they charge you $30 a piece ? We are renting our car on St John but my sister in law and her husband are renting on St Thomas. I thought we could all come over on the car ferry but not if my husband and I have to pay $60 . We will come over on people ferry!

Nancy, it says there is no charge for the vehicle's passengers. They charge you $30 for the car for a one way trip. Hope this helps. :D

It's $30 regardless of how many people or bags. Dont but round trip or will have to makesure you get on the same barge to return. There are 3-4 different ones.

Nancy, I did a "CUT and PASTE" below.

St. Thomas - St. John Car Barge
Barges operate between St. Thomas (Red Hook) and St. John (Cruz Bay). No charge for vehicle’s passengers. Arrive at least 25 minutes before departure.

Here are some tips since it sounds like you've never done the car ferry before...

- When you get to the terminal in Red Hook there's a little booth where you have to pay a government fee...it's around $5.

- Since you must back onto the barge, you park backwards and wait.

- A guy/guys will direct you onto the barge. Since there is more than one company, we take whatever arrives first. A round trip ticket will save you a little bit of money, but then you have to take the same barge back, which could be stressful when you're trying to make a flight. There is always at least 1 barge at the dock that is going somewhere other than STJ (and isn't always running), so if you're not sure, just ask.

- Once you're parked on the barge, wait in your vehicle for a lady to come get your money. Cash only. Once you've paid you can either choose to stay in your vehicle or go sit up top.

- Use the bathroom before boarding the ferry. The bathrooms are NASTY. We always get food at Food Center, which is very close to the ferry dock and use the restroom there. I've also used the bathroom at the people ferry dock since it's so close.

- If you've got a long wait for the car ferry, send someone over to the people ferry terminal to buy a round of drinks.
Let us live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.

Just thought I would update, there is a little bar in the YELLOW building by the car barge wait area. We had to wait last November for the next car barge and had time for a couple of drinks! :D

7 more days and we do it again!
