Bicycle Rental

Post by jjakenj »

Hello,

Flying in on Wednesday, and really looking forward to our first St Johns visit and 8 Tuff Miles experience! Ride/Race bicycles competitively at home and was wondering if there is any place in the USVI to rent bicycles to cruise the hills on the island?

Am not finding much online, but have read about guys/gals doing some great riding on the island.

Thanks!

I have never seen bicycles on the roads of StJ. I would not recommend it to anything but an experienced rider with at least a rudimentary knowledge of the terrain, roads, traffic and driver "eccentricities". In other words, visit first and decide if it is for you.
If bicycling becomes popular on StJ it will become more dangerous to drive as well unless the NPS were to widen the park roads to add a bike lane. :D

OP is coming down for 8 Tuff Miles, so he means "our" STJ. We often ride bikes on vacation and go cycletouring as a means of travel. But, we've been to STJ 8 times, and have never wanted to ride on STJ. If you're just looking for a way to get some exercise, think about hiking the many trails on the island. http://www.trailbandit.org is our go to resource.

Thanks for the replies. I had heard the roads and drivers are unique in St. John, but have a good friend who was down for a week last year and did a good amount of riding... perhaps he had flown his bike in, too.

No worries, will probably focus on the hiking (am staying on the mountain) and enjoy some rum in the sand.

Is the weather forecast always calling for a 30-50% chance of scattered showers but with a UV Index of 8+? Hoping for some great weather!

I've seen some high end bikes being ridden and presume their owners brought them in. You might be able rent something in STT but I doubt in STJ. An adventure bike racer friend brought his mountain bike and road some pretty gnarly offroad climbs, but I bet they weren't legal. NPS isn't very bike friendly.
