bugs this time of year?

Post by northerngal »

Does anyone know what the bugs are like on STJ this time of year? We have never had a problem, but if I need bug stuff, I don't want to forget it!

Bugs (Skeeters and no-see-ums) can be bad any time of year. It all depends on rainfall, wind, location, etc. We can have no skeeters at all at our house high on Bordeaux Mt. but if we go down to sea level (especially in shrubby areas) the skeeters could be horrible on the same day.

Bring your bug repellant if you want something other than Deet based. I also suggest light weight long pants and blouses so you won't have to use chemicals.

What bugs? I have read several post on this forum over the years about bugs during the off season but in five trips to St John in late Feb or early March I have yet to experience a problem. It never hurts to have spray handy but you probably won't need it.

Last week we had a little bit of an issue; we were there from Dec 28-Jan 7, located on Devers Bay. One of our party of 6 got eaten alive all 10 days, the rest of us just had a few bites here and there. Deep Woods Off and itch cream came in handy. I guess it just depends on your proclivity to the little critters.

Pour some cheap gin on a cocktail napkin and put it on the bite, in a few minutes the itch is gone. Also the Gin works week for stopping and drying the Christmas Bush and mango sap poison ivy. Voice of experience for both!

Hey Northern - we are only two days in and no bugs so far. I always pack repellent and bite sticks - there's a nice breeze which also helps with the bugs.

We were there 1/9-1/14 and only had a few random mosquito bites. Have fun!
