A close work friend has been listening to me wax on about STJ for years now, and is dying to see blue water. Her kids gave her a trip for their 25th anniversary, but got the island "wrong" LOL, so they're staying on STT. They plan to take the ferry to STJ for a day to see what I've been raving about, and maybe a taxi to Trunk Bay.

Well, I think that taxiing to Trunk Bay and thinking you've seen St. John is like hearing some kid sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and thinking you've experienced music!!! And I can barely stand it.
So.....for a few months now, this bee's been buzzing in my head, that I need to get to STJ, just to show John and Beth the island - even for one day! I have almost no budget - $1000?
I'm thinking if I can score flights for less than $400, I could stay at Cinnamon Bay in a bare site for maybe 4 days, and rent a Jeep one day to show off "my island." If I could save some money, I could move up a notch to a tent site, and if I could save more, I score a last minute unit at Cruz Views, but then I'd need taxi money to get to the beach. Actually, I think I'd brave hitchhiking to the beach.
Am I missing any really dirt cheap accomodations? I'd need to be on the Cruz Bay end, because of hitchhiking or taxi's. I could live on granola bars for a few days at Cinnamon Bay, right?
Thoughts or ideas?

Oh, and I know I'd be taking my chance on finding a Jeep for a day, but I'm thinking positive, and I'm persistent....

Minde, I would think your friends are renting a car for at least part of their stay. We did a "cheap" trip one year and used a STT condo as a base. We took the car ferry over twice for full days on STJ. Maybe they could do that and pick you up as a guide. We also did the people ferry and hung close to Cruz Bay. This also let us do dinner and nightlife. Even with the ferry expenses it was cheaper since it was high season. If you stay in Cruz Bay, you could hike with them to beaches. Guess it depends how adventurous you both are ....wait we know you are!

Sounds like a fun adventure! Is it still possible to find airfare from the northeast for under $400- ever?

We sent friends who were on their Honeymoon on St. Thomas to St. John for
the day. They had heard our family talk about it for years. They hated it. I couldn't
believe it until I found out what they did. They thought everything was too expensive. They paid for the ferry over, taxi to Trunk, fee for Trunk, rent for
the snorkle gear, food at Trunk, taxi back to town and ferry back to St. Thomas.
I would not call that a fun day on St. John but I guess that is what you get when you come over for a day without a car. I am glad St. John got their money just wish they could have seen more. Your friends will are lucky to have someone show them the island.That will be a treat for you to show them what you love about St.John.

LOL, yes, my fiends are planning to "do it all wrong (!!!)," and that's why I feel compelled to come! They are not renting a vehicle at all, just staying at Sapphire for the week except the journey to STJ.
They offered for me to stay with them, but they'll be on "the wrong island," and it's an anniversary trip
It's so funny how anxious it makes me, that they're doing it wrong!
And they're not researching, either

Not to dissuade your quest for a trip, but we saw nothing but Trunk Bay on our first trip and it was enough to keep us going back. And don't plan on going beyond Trunk Bay on our next trip (well, except for that little 8-tuff thing).
If you do go, hope to meet you finally, as we'll be there that week.

We have done Cinnamon bay in a baresite...with a jeep for part of the time..and had a cottage with no jeep...(we had planned on getting one for part of our stay)...but found it cheaper just to taxi to the north shore beaches..we got a small tent at Wally...about 40.00 bucks I think...packed it in Luggage...along with snacks and an air mattress..We had a blast...I wouldnt hesitate to do it again...I think a cpl mornings..we had peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast...and rather enjoyed it...I might add...go for it !!!

Minde- I would check with St. John Guest Suites. I know they will be opening two more units later in the new year and you may be in luck for a good deal!!

IMHO...(btw, anybody that starts off by saying IMHO...usually isn't humble)...but do have an opinion.
That being said...How well do you know these people...have you vacationed with them before to know what the like and don't like.
While I get your enthusiasm/obsession for the Rock...not all would share that. Has anybody ever been told and sold about a "fabulous-can't miss-best in the world" dining experience? Only to finally go there and wonder what all the fuss was about.
We have good friends that their vacation is going to their condo and laying at the pool for 7 days...not for us but works for them. They are the ones that would be fine with a beach front hotel on the "Wrong Island" for a week and happily take the Taxi back to the airport and think that they just had the time of their lives.
For countless thousands....Truck Bay is as much nirvana that their brains can probably absorb,comprehend and enjoy anyways. (Besides...how much better can Truck Bay be to a Blue Water newbie anyways)
As their un-invited Tour guide...they may be underwhelmed and you might be dismayed when they don't go bonkers over your slice of heaven.
We discovered STJ over 20 years ago...on a day trip from a cruise ship and rented a jeep and saw the place for ourselves...and the rest as the say is history.
I think it's sweet what you are doing...we have helped 7 sets of families over the past 12 years become involved with the obsession...4 out of 7 have returned...so, it's not for everybody.
