overrated: mack
underrated: papabou
just kidding : mack says everything on stj is underrated & papabou says he agrees but somethings are more underrated than others. for one, no one seems to to rant about the sheer beauty of this place i love. a 2 hr ride about (as compared to crod dundee walkabout) soothes the soul and washes away the dispair and concern i have for the future awaiting my grandaughters. mack and i were born during the great war and raised by the greatest generation. we have lived the best of times only hope i don't have to see the worse of times.
time for lunch.

Re: Most Overrated / Most Underrated
OK 54b, I'll take the bait.
The entire American gastro-economic situation is overrated! There I said it.
Americans have the highest rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease IN THE WORLD!!! Not coincidentally, it's all that fried-goodness you're referring to that is the culprit.
In my experiences, I've travelled to 45 of the 50 states, 20 foreign countries and 8 Caribbean Islands, I'm continually amazed at how fat and lazy the majority of American are! Furthermore, for the most part when they're travelling they're content to eat the same cholesterol-laden, trans-fat saturated crap that they eat at home.
The last time I was in France, I couldn't believe how packed MacDonald's was. Most of the people eating their "food" were Americans!
I'm wondering if anyone was paying attention when the fast-food workers tried to strike for an increase to their minimum wage? Or, has anyone noticed how beef production is wreaking havoc on our ecosystem?
Whenever we're in St John, I avoid Skinny's like the plague. (And, we stay in Coral Bay every time). We try to find local cuisine whenever possible. We love Sogo's, Roaryal Abeba and we even had a good meal at the Pink Corner. We'll be there next week and are making Sogo's our first stop off the boat.
I do understand the concept of an al fresco, mosquito-laden setting with same-day service and horribly disgusting bathrooms. It's appealing to those who believe that by going there they are somehow "roughing it". IMHO, it is THE most over-rated establishment on the island. But, I do have to admit that I've bought more than one t-shirt there.
TOGA TOGA TOGA!!!

Roaryal's gone now. Should try Hercules at least once if you haven't before - his pates are great, curry chicken is great, other food plates are good. Shela's still looking for a new place to park her Pot, which we all look forward to. No Pink Corner for me, ever.
Locals here, sadly, are seen every day getting off the barge with enough McD's for a family of ten, and/or eating at the worst fast food you'll ever lay your hands on at W&W's in CB.

Add us to the list of those who found SkinnyLegs to be overrated. We waited until this last trip, to try it, and.... meh.....
I, too, like the shops nearby, though.

Re: Most Overrated / Most Underrated
We went to try Skinny's last July because of reading good things about it here.... Not impressed at all...We actually ordered drinks..and by the time the waitress came to take our food orders...We had decided we just didn't feel good about eating there...and left after paying for the drinks..
On the flip side....
Now I was VERY impressed with Zozo's (in there previous locale)... The food was great, as was the bartender, and the View couldn't be beat!
Also although Zozo's was expensive, not half as expensive as Sweet Plantains.
I have to say SP is another restaurant that was WAY overrated IMHO...We paid somewhere around $150.00 by the time we left..(our anniversary dinner) and we only had two drinks each and our meals...AND the ONLY thing offered was curry...At home a curried dish is the LEAST expensive to get in a restaurant... The one nice thing about that place was the personalized service as we were the ONLY people to serve... the place was empty the whole time we were there....( I guess I figured out why)...
and I agree the one major thing underrated on the Island...is the island itself...But lets not let that info out..or everything will get even MORE expensive...
Fun thread!

Re: Most Overrated / Most Underrated
I will add my vote to Skinnys being over rated.
wanackmamak, in all my trips to France and any foreign destination really, I have not darkened the door of McDonalds so I have not noticed either the numbers or demographics of the clientele there. Did you have to wait in line a long time for service?
Yes I have paid attention to fast food workers and organizers paying people to hold signs on their "strike" lines with their belief that they should be paid more than healthcare workers.

Re: Most Overrated / Most Underrated
Overrated:
Hawksnest Beach- sorry to all who love it, but it just has never lived up to the hype for me. We've been at least once every trip and it's always been quite rough and mediocre snorkeling. Sometimes the beach has been really small and all people huddled on top of each other due to tide or swells. Every time we've been, I wished we'd gone to a different North Shore beach.
Cafe Roma- If it was near my home, I'd find a new Italian place. But, I'll give it a try after the rebuild and see if anything's changed.
Deli Grotto sandwiches- nothing special except the price (just because it's expensive doesn't make it good). The breakfast was good though, and I do LOVE the coconut crack bar.
Underrated:
Sun Dog Cafe- I think it's the chickens that add to the charm. Good food, good prices, and my kids even love it.
Coconut Coast Studio- such a great thing to do when it rains. Always beautiful artwork and gifts. It's in such a cool spot, and you get to play with the dogs.
Hiking- we love to explore and do a new hike every year. We hike in search for the "sensitive plant" now that we have kids in tow. They absolutely love searching for it, and it's like we hit the lottery every time we find it.

Re: Most Overrated / Most Underrated
Ok....I might as well throw out mine/ours:
Overrated:
Woody's happy hour. Just too crowded and we second the too many "woo girls"
Salt Pond - only times we've been it has been rough and hot. Wife isn't a snorkeler, so the rocky beach isn't her thing. If it we're calm I can see the snorkeling being pretty good.
Underrated:
Motu - but that is changing rapidly.
Walking the dogs at the ACC! Did this on our last trip with EagleRayLover and it will be a regular part of our trips from now on.
Jake's - awesome breakfast watching Cruz Bay wake up. Great coffee, too.

Agree. We stopped at Motu several times in February and I look forward to going back in two months. The wine was nice and cool and came in a real glass. The mixed drinks my husband had were good.KTinTX wrote:

I love hitting the bars in Wharfside but there are times I don't want to fight the crowds or have a wet, sandy dog rubbing against my legs after I showered (black lab at Joe's, I am talking to you!) Motu is a nice place for pre-dinner drinks.
