private message notifications
seems i once received email notices when i had a pm. recently i received a few and would not have known about had i not logged in to post on a topic. has alert been deleted, do i need to change something on my membership or am i in penalty box due to sometimes long trivial posts? anyone else getting pm notices?
thanks for help

my guess it's your spam filter

Re: private message notifications
Shoe is probably right...
You might try the following: go to Control Panel, then Board Preferences, then Edit Global Settings, then Notify Private Messages... check yes! You still have to log in though, I think.

Have you changed your email address? That is the usual problem -
Has anyone else had this issue? I am getting them -

Re: private message notifications
I'm not receiving notifications, either. Google chrome and IE are browsers and no new email. I tried to figure this out a few days ago - glad Papabou said something. I thought it was just me...
Re: private message notifications
I am looking into other possibilities - since the whole site was just migrated there were bound to be some issues - but - the notifications for PMs and watched topics are working - I have received several.
I think the emails must be getting stopped in transit somewhere - this could be preventative spam measures from your ISPs or email providers since the IP of the site is new and perhaps it is not a "trusted" source.
What I am trying to figure out is whether they are actually going out and getting zapped or lost somewhere, or if they are not going out at all. So now we have papabou and mindehankins and I think someone else also mentioned this to me.
Have you all checked out the suggestion from lprof - go to your Control Panel and make sure you have these alerts turned on and that you have posting replies turned on?

This is a test to see if I get notified - I have found the issue... it is in the mail server set. Working on it -

Re: private message notifications
I made a configuration change - can a few of you maybe try to test it by replying if you are watching this thread?
The issue is aggressive spam filtering by your mail providers - it seems AOL users, as well as some Comcast and others may be having this issue. Their mail system does not "trust" where the mail is coming from, so it never even gets to your local in box.
I am working on it - but it is technically beyond my scope... I am trying to get help from my provider also.
Thanks!

Technical!
For those interested in the technical end of this:
When I moved the server (actually moved off of 1 dedicated machine to 3 cloud machines) I basically had to do it all myself for cost reasons. So I ended up just copying a lot of settings from the important configuration files.
The issue was that the host name in the Postfix conf. file was using a different domain name to send mail - so that when your (good) ISPs saw that, mail coming from virgin-islands-on-line.com but via florence-journal.com, etc. it blocked the delivery - it did not even send it to you to file as spam, it is still on my server.
I have now updated the reverse DNS (which lets the ISP look at the IP address and say, hey, is this email really coming from the domain/website?).
Here is the error message from the system:
host mailin-02.mx.aol.com[205.188.155.110] refused to talk to me: 421 4.7.1 : (DNS:NR) http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/421dnsnr.html
And now that I have fixed this issue and tested it on the AOL system:
You can see that is says Success -
It is now working for everyone except AOL it seems though - even though the configuration seems correct, it may take 24 to 48 for the DNS changes I made to resolve across the Internets...
So - sorry to go into such detail but I get a lot of "what do you do for a living exactly" questions from lots of people. This is a good illustration of how most of a day can go by working on something that you really hadn't planned on
(not that I am complaining - this is the fun part of the job!).
