Traveling around St. John

Post by jsauls1 »

This will be our first time to St. John and was wondering the best way to see the island , by scooter or jeep.

Definitely a Jeep. The roads are very twisty and turny - not a good place to ride a scooter.

You have to have a death wish to ride a scooter on STJ.
Let us live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.

Riding a scooter on St. John reminds me of that part in Dumb and Dumber when they're doing about 10mph struggling to get up the mountains in Aspen while 20 cars are behind them laying on the horns. I imagine it would look something like that!

Try dana at Carolina Corral in Coral Bay for a horsebackmtour or a donkey cart ride. http://www.digitaldudes.com/carolinacorral.html
If you have to drive, make it a jeep-like vehicle. If it's your first trip, you might consider hiring a driver so you can actually see the island instead of trying to maneuver on the wrong side of the (possibly wet) road in an unfamiliar place. Second time rent.

Forgot to mention
that Dana's the one who takes in injured animals ... Donkeys and goats that get hit by cars, for instance. If you're so inclined, she can use all the financial help she can get to take care of them. She also lets people pet the animals, in case you have kids who like petting zoos.

I would def rent a car - preferably 4 x 4. Driving on the "wrong" side isn't that difficult because you just follow the other cars. Would NOT recommend a scooter. Renting a dinghy for a day is another good way to see the north shore of the island. Whatever you do - you will have a great time.
