Last minute Airfare

Just dreaming about possibility of last minute trip in August. Great deals on Villas seem to be possible , but It appears airfare doesn't come down closer to trip. I always book way in advance . Is there a secret to get a good deal. If my husband saw this post he would die lol.

We got lucky last winter buying tickets 6 weeks out. We paid $360 each NS from Newark which is very cheap! No secret, just lucky except that we were in the last row by the lavatory. That part wasn't great.

The best tool I've found for an open-ended airfare search is ITA Matrix:
http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

Select "see calendar of dates" and enter a range for length of stay (for example, 6-8).

Google flights (https://www.google.com/flights/) has something similar; click on the little graph icon on the right to see daily prices by month.

Darn, just saw very tempting flights for under $400 from RDU for August-September and I haven't even written the trip report from our last visit yet!
