Rental car roach infestation
Rental car roach infestation
We are here on the island for our 5th trip and possibly my favorite trip so far. We're having an amazing time. So I feel silly for complaining. BUT...
When we drive our rental car at night, there are roaches. It's not like they're everywhere...but we've killed them on doors, on seats, on the dash, ceiling, etc. As soon as we open the doors at night we see at least one, if not a few. And then more as we drive. We don't see them at all during the day. The first night we thought it may have been because we left the beach chairs in there. But we have since cleared it out. I'm not a huge bug-o-phobe, but it's creeping me out!
Is this just island living or do you think it's worth some kind of discount on our rental?
EDIT: The company gave us a free day off the cost of the rental. We are satisfied with that. I removed the name of the company from my original post, since this was an unusual situation and I don't want this one incident to cause any issues for them. We've had good experiences with this company the two times we have used them and we would rent from them again.

Ewwww. I don't know, but we've never had that problem, but have never rented on STT.

I would ask for a discount for sure. I would also get a couple of Big trash bags to put my luggage in when it's time to leave. I would be so afraid of bringing one of those suckers home with me. We travel in the winter and always leave the luggage outside in the NE winter for a couple of hours before bringing it in the house. I have never seen a bug in our luggage but it's something I am always watchful for.
Re: Rental car roach infestation
My friends who live here were just telling me that they had them in their car. They popped the seats forward and they were living under the seats where the kids had dropped food. They lay eggs their eggs in the carpet. They need to be vacuumed out and the carpets need to be cleaned. They haven't had a problem since. I think it is island living but it is still gross and you shouldn't have to deal with it...

We live in Florida under big oak trees, so I have had them. I keep my car sprayed now. You should not have a problem when you pay an arm and a leg to rent a car. It is an easy fix though... go to the hardware store and buy some roach spray and spray the car before you go to bed. I would defiantly want a discount!

I have nothing useful to add, but this gives me nightmares. *shudder*
I can deal with the occasional roach or two in a house, but being trapped in a car with them? Having them run over your feet?

Edit and update to original post above.
Thanks for all the feedback! It didn't put any kind of damper on our trip, since we were mostly out during the day and never saw them then.
Walk of woe today, sooooo sad!! Miss my paradise already.

Re: Rental car roach infestation
We found out about cockroach car infestations in Hawaii on our honeymoon. Unfortunately, part of the tropics. We bought traps and put it under the seats and it solved the problem.
My friend who lives in Coral Bay says she has an infestation in her car because she lets her child eat in the car. The roaches must be attracted to the crumbs.

Many times the source of a roach problem can be traced to carrying corrugated cardboard boxes -- they often sit in a warehouse and attract like a high rise condo to roach populations - beer cases are particulary and commonly infested with roaches and eggs.
We never let corrugated cardboard aboard the boat! -- it stays in the dinghy. Also because we often are carrying boxes both ways, home from the store and later to the dumpster, in the car, it can start a nasty cycle - that eating in the car only adds to.
