White Bay in June?

Post by Jumper »

We are looking at taking a ferry over to Jost for the day, we will be down in about three weeks. My question is how crowded does the beach & bars get this time of year? I saw a Youtube video that someone took and the beach and bars were packed and it looked like one big drunk fest. I don`t mind a crowd, but this did not look appealing.

Thanks for any help.

There is a good chance the video you saw was from a holiday. I've visited Jost in June, July, September and October and Soggy Dollar has never been more than half full... it's busy, but not like you are describing.

Jumper,
I've been three times in mid to late June. We've never found it excessively crowded. Never more than a 1 or 2 person wait at bar at Soggy Dollar. Everywhere else was virtually empty. If possible avoid the 2 and 3 cruise ship days in STT. Enjoy Jost. We're making a day trip in about 2 weeks.

My response won't help with how crowded it may or may not be, but if you plan to take the ferry, see if you can do it on a Sunday. The ferry leaves St. John at 8:30 but doesn't leave Jost until 5:30. All other days, the ferry departs Jost at 4:00pm. Same price but an hour and a half longer to enjoy your time!

Sat. and Sun. are usually the busiest days since many locals from the USVI and BVI have the day off and private boats -- if there is a cruise ship in Tortola it can be busier on that day as well.

We just got back from STJ last week and we spent a day 'josting'. We go to STJ the same 2 weeks every year and it has never been as busy as it was this time - both on STJ and JVD. When we arrived in the morning there were only 3 boats visible and by the time we left at 3:15 my wife counted 28 boats. Some were very large and unloaded 30+ people. It wasn't unpleasant, but there were a lot of people there. It didn't get real busy until after lunch. Also, it is much quieter down the beach away from Soggy's. One Love was just about empty - we enjoyed good lunch there also.

Another option is to go to Soggy's(White Bay) in the morning and have your taxi driver pick you up at 1:00 (before the crowd) and take you to Foxy's. In our experiences, it is much quieter there in the afternoons.

Hope this info helps.
Leap, and the net will appear.

Just take a look at the Soggy Dollar Bar webcam (on the top of the webpage link below) on any day to get a feel for how crowded the beach gets (and at different times). Helps to get us through in between visits! http://www.soggydollar.com/
