Fresh Fruit on Island?

Post by sherban »

Hey all, We're headed to STJ in a couple weeks ( 2 adults, 2 kids) and my peeps are looking to experience some nice, fresh, local fruit while there.

Can you provide your reccomendations on the best places to buy fresh fruit on island?

Also if there are politically correct places where it is ok to pick some fresh fruit on island, pls share those locations with me too! (via PM if that's better)...

What is there....mangoes, coconuts, bananas, pineapple...?

Thanks again!!

There is a stand in town that has fresh fruit, across the street from Uncle Joes BBQ. I think it is called Our Market? I bought local mangoes there last summer. I think I paid $5 for three huge ones. The two we ate were so delicious. We lost the third to a pearly eyed thrasher that flew into our villa and ate it!
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Bought the most delicious bananas and limes at love city in coral bay. I said to my husband, " Thrse ate the most banana tasting bananas ever"

Make sure to stop at Josephine's Garden, in Coral Bay Garden Center. Turn at love City Mini Mart and go back a quarter mile or so. It's on the left. Got a small papaya, a soursop and a bag of her fresh baby greens.

Papayas grow like weeds all over, are usually not spoken for, and ripen at any time of the year. The leaves and fruit clusters are very distinctive and easy to spot. Ripe ones will have turned from green to yellow, but if they are even beginning to turn yellow (as with the lower fruits in the photo below), you can accelerate the ripening by picking a few and using a knife to score the skin with three or four shallow cuts along its length.

Mangoes ripen in August, and while the trees can be a bit more proprietary, they are usually so loaded that liberating one or two is no big deal (especially if you are fast). Ripeness is indicated by the sunward side of the fruit turning red. We had some large sets this year, but the fruits were very small due to lack of water. May appears to addressed that problem.

Yes, as liamsaunt said, http://www.ourmarketsmoothies.com/
And the smoothies there are fabulous! And you can get a cold coconut with a straw (with or without rum!) Say hi to Thomas!
