make a shirt of ART
We have been doing "make a shirt of ART" workshops at our studios.
STJ writer Andrea Milam, talked wi. me, looked at our photos, and wrote this nice piece about creative discovery.
Creative Discovery
Perhaps you’ve seen the media coverage of George W. Bush’s recent pastime – painting. Maybe you read the reviews of critics who decry his talent; it’s possible you even giggled to yourself at the painting of the former president’s toes poking out of the bathtub with the water running.
Whether the 43rd president has any real talent is irrelevant, Sloop Jones has been telling his students at the opening of each of his Shirt of Art workshops, where guests are invited to use the well-known East End artist’s studio and materials to create their own keepsake t-shirts.
“Who cares if he paints good or bad,” says Sloop, paraphrasing a critic who stuck her neck out for Bush and his paintings. “What matters is that he paints, and that he engages himself in the act of creative discovery.”
By the time many of us are adults, our artistic creativity has fallen by the wayside in favor of our careers, families, and the minutiae of daily life. We find ourselves intimidated by something like picking up a paintbrush, because painting is something we haven’t studied or been schooled on, so we’d surely turn out some terrible piece of art, right? Not necessarily.
The photos in today’s blog post are evidence that even the most untrained amateur artists can, after a little instruction on color from an artist like Sloop and some experimentation with mixing colors on paper towels, create a Shirt of Art that they’re proud to wear and show off.
Click here to visit the Sloop Jones website http://www.sloopjones.com, where you can sign up for a summer Shirt of Art workshop, held Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through July 2. You’ll walk away from the workshop with your very own keepsake t-shirt and a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment.

Re: make a shirt of ART
Wow! I love the shirts, and I would love to attend a Sloop Jones workshop someday. We usually visit St. John in the fall though...
We had a little heat wave last week and I got to wear my Sloop Jones dress for the first time since we came back from STJ last fall!

Re: make a shirt of ART
We offer the workshops all year.
Most likely we will continue on Tuesdays.
Late June we will update the day of the week.
It is fun for the painters..and inspiring for me.
After 40 years of painting, discovery is still there.
