help please

Post by Beth Cruz »

Our flight leaves Boston at 9:45 am. Would it be too risky to arrive at the airport at 8:10 am?

Appreciate yourr thoughts.

Beth, too tight. Get Bob up earlier or go into Boston night before. Tuesday is a rough drive during rush-hour traffic from Center Harbor. I'll be waiting for Bob early Wednesday morning downtown, as usual. Safe travels!!

How busy of an airport is Boston? And are you checking luggage?

I flew to Ft. Myers last Friday out of Hartford. We arrived about 45 minutes before our flight. (We had carry ons only.) We walked right through security, grabbed a snack for the kids and boarded right away.

We're flying out of JFK next month. For that trip, I plan to arrive about an hour and a half early just to be safe.

Beth,
That would be too close for comfort for me. No offense but I would not compare leaving from Hartford to leaving from Boston. I travel from MD to MA and Hartford is a little airport . Last time we flew out of there not one person was in the security line. Even Southwest employees don't arrive for the first AM flight until 1/2 before the flight. Boston is huge in comparison and I would worry about lines etc. I fly out of BWI and have stood in security lines for an hour...you just never know.

Honestly, it depends. We fly from Logan -- we check in online the night before and print our boarding passes; we don't have bags to check, so we go directly to security. If you do it that way, in my opinion, arriving an hour and a half ahead is totally fine! (we've done it lots of times with an hour or less, but I agree that that's living on the edge :)

But you do have to think about traffic around 8am, and if you're checking in at the airport, or checking bags, then you may feel comfortable with a bit more time to work with.

That is too close. For whatever reason, Logan has been sloooooooow lately. John flies out of Logan often for work and he said that it's been taking about 40 minutes minimum to get up to security and that's with no checked bags, boarding pass in hand, and being in the priority line. There are some relatively new screening procedures in place at Logan and it seems to be slowing the line for whatever reason.

Plus, you'll be heading to the airport at the height of rush hour. Even if you use the HOV lanes it is going to be frustratingly slow. Plan on getting there earlier and if by some stroke of luck you arrive and get through early, go have breakfast someplace in the terminal before boarding the plane.

I will tell you that last time we flew out of Logan together, we arrived two hours before our 9AM flight, left our bags outside the terminal with the skycap (no wait), went in the "even more speed" line for security and still only had 15 minutes to eat something before boarding.

Thanks everyone. I guess I knew the answer. The problem is the other option is to get to Logan at 7am (we are taking a bus from Concord,NH). I am going to STJ :D so maybe I should not complain.

Last night Channel 4 news had a segment on how slow it has been at Logan...different types of travellers having different complaints. Plus, with it being the middle of school vacation in Ma, you just never know. Early bird gets to St. John with no headaches. :D

Are you leaving next Tuesday? I bet Logan will be super busy with it being school vacation and a lot of marathon visitors heading home.

Get there early, have breakfast and a bloody mary.

Enjoy your trip!
