Trip to Jost for 8

Post by deniseb »

Had a day planned to go to Jost with a captain and boat that we used 2 years ago. The captain emailed and said he couldn't take us due to a scheduling conflict and put me in touch with the owner of the company. I called and he said he can only take 6 and that there was no way the captain took 8 of us to Jost. He basically called me a liar! Going to Jost that day 2 years ago with our group of 8 is not something I would make up!
Does anyone know of someone who could take us over?
Thanks!

What boat did you use two years ago? That sounds odd. Maybe they downgraded their certification between then and now?

We went on Born To Rhumb a couple years back and it was a good boat, fast, stable and lots of room. It has a different owner now. We tied up next to it in February and the crew seemed nice.

There are companies that run a "demise" charter - easiest explanation is that they carry 6 passengers and the 7th and 8th they list as" crew" - you then (I believe) accept all responsibility for the boat (unknown to you usually) There is one very well known company that does this - maybe they were just fined because they were stopped by the Coast Guard (I have no knowledge of that so it is just one possible explanation) so are now denying that they have done this in the past.

ps: I do not book this company :)

If you are only going to Jost, why don't you just take the inter-island ferry? It is approximately 70.00 RT from STJ and drops you off in Great Harbour. You can easily then take a taxi to White Bay, it is about a 5 minute ride :D

A 'demise charter' is not a matter of calling passengers crew it is literally a contract that transfer full responsibility of the vessel to the charterer - including all expenses.
This is a good explanation: [ directly from the Coast Guard Safety Manual ]
http://www.sarasotasailing.com/pdf/USCG ... arters.pdf

Note that the charterer must have "full possession and control" and "all food, fuel and stores are provided by the charterer" and that the charterer may discharge the hired Captain, who must be paid separately, at any time without cause.
Very few if any of the vessels skirting the laws by calling it a 'demise charter' would satisfy any of these requirements, especially an owner operated vessel!!
