Quick Pics - Day six

Post by michigan girls »

No snorkling pictures today, as I killed my good water camera yesterday, and the back up one today :( . I'm going to blame it on the Jellyfish (so many of them in the water the last couple days!) Only got 2 stings though, despite swimming among them for hours, and the two were very minor, like mosquito bites.

Started off at Jumbie. We had the whole beach to ourselves for over an hour - lovely

This little guy popped up out of the sand right next to our blanket

Then we found his little brother a few feet down the beach

After a lovely quiet morning and a good snorkel, it was back to the villa to pick up the rest of the group. It had been decided that Caneel Bay was the best choice for them. I was not so crazy about this choice, but I'm a team player. I will say, although I don't really enjoy the resort setting or the manicured beach, the snorkeling was quite good. We saw squid, octopus, many large reef fish, a turtle and a very colorful sea cucumber. Sad I didn't have a working water camera. The kids enjoyed the beach:

and the adults enjoyed the beverages (I had a lovely IguanaColada) which also allowed us to validate our parking so we could avoid the $20 per car fee.
Next it was over to the Westin so the young ones could parasail. I was my first time on the Westin Property, and I gotta mention that all the people working there are super nice and friendly. I went out on the boat with the kids so I could get photos while the rest of the crew hung out at the pool bar. The kids really enjoyed their parasailing and the captain and mate were very nice and entertaining.

After this, we headed over to Rhumblines for dinner. I had the stuffed prawns

The lobster tempura was also yummy

Then back up the mountain to clean the villa and pack. Sigh... tomorrow morning into Cruz Bay to return the cars, have Connections hold our luggage then hang around town a few hours until Dohm's picks up from the walk of woe. Should be home by around 3AM Wednesday :(

This is a serious question, because I've never been stung...

Does being stung by a jelly fish hurt instantly? Do you KNOW that you were stung as soon as it happens? Also, what is the remedy once you are stung?

Safe travels, again great pictures.

Our new underwater camera arrived yesterday, and I had to hold back and not snorkle in the bathroom tub to try it out. The land pictures it takes are awesome. It will be so nice to not drag my dslr to the beach. It still has an important place in my heart and on this trip, but the daily trips to the beach are hard on it.

It was pretty instant, but it wasn't really bad, a mild bee sting at best (these were pretty small jellyfish) I did not use a remedy, as I don't have a bad reaction, by the end of the day I couldn't even tell where they were without really trying. I have heard that people who react poorly to them use vinegar to dull the reaction.

I should also reiterate that there were thousands of them in the water over a period of three days, and I snorkel a long time. Only two stings in that time was surprising to me. Of everyone else in our group, only 2 others had stings (1 a piece) and they were really minor as well. Last year I swam through a cloud of babies while snorkeling the mangroves and my back was pin-prickly for about a half and hour. Didn't really hurt, kind of felt like how your foot feels if it falls asleep then you try to walk on it. I actually thought it was kind of cool, but I am a little weird
