Donkey Diner-new ownership?

Post by mlr214 »

I've been reading that Donkey diner just isn't the same now that its under new management. What do you guys think. We loved there pizza last year and are looking forward to having it another night this trip but don't want to get our hopes up.

We were wondering the same thing. For years we have heard how good breakfast was and had planned on going next week. I've heard it's not the same now.

We have been to STJ twice, 2011 pre-sale, and 2012 post sale. We ate at Donkey Diner nearly every morning. I ordered the same thing every day, both trips, and there was absolutely no difference in my food. (scrambled eggs with biscuits & gravy). Some people haven't been happy with their breakfasts, but I don't know what they ordered. Mine was perfect. 8)

We had pizza this last trip, 2012 and it was fine, although we hadn't had it the year before so we have no basis for comparison on the pizza. It was a good (& cheap) meal for two though!

Just back from St. John yesterday and we had a pizza our first night (excellent), and breakfast one morning (very good)... My only complaint, and it's a major one, is that there is now a TV inside the restaurant and another mounted to the outside wall in the back picnic table area... Both were on with the volume up at breakfast. Somehow, I felt it really didn't fit the ambiance that I seek when I come to St. John... We sat on the front patio which was TV Free...

Oh yuk on the TV!! :x I think I might politely ask if they would turn it off while I'm there next time! I'm all about escaping the real world when I'm on St. John!

The food is no longer good since the excellent chef , Matt , left . But the real reason we locals stopped going to Donkey Diner is we saw the new owner shooting the chickens with a BB gun. The sweet bush cats that the prior owners fed have also " disappeared" from the property .
If you want really good food & island ambience in Coral Bay , go to Pickles or Miss Lucy's .

oh wow. that is completely disturbing (to be understated). been going to STJ for almost 30 years-- never ate at donkey diner (not a big breakfast person) but thought we might give it a try this time--(son is a big breakfast person)
Now, absolutely not.
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

We ate at the Donkey Diner for pizza in January and sadly, it was nothing to write home about. I didn't care for the flavor of the sauce and the dough wasn't great. Wouldn't do it again. :(
