Re visiting St John

Post by maggs3705 »

I am so excited to be returning to St John- it's been 5 years. I wonder if things have changed? Has Coral Bay become more developed? Is Vie's still open and will I be able to have some of her iced tea and hang out under my favorite palm tree on the beach? Is there still jazz at the Beach Bar on Sunday afternoon and at Skinny Legs on occassion? Is food still outrageously expensive ( I understand why, just asking...) ? Thank goodness the rum is always affordable!! :) ! Any great new places to eat and/or drink? What else do I need to know? Looking forward to this trip as I watch snow fall outside my window here in NH!

Oh, you must be so excited! Good for you! Yes, Vie's is still open, and there's a houseboat that serves as a floating bar that anchors in her bay, so you can swim up and have a drink if you like. In Coral Bay, there's a new deli called Pickles, that people are talking about, and a BBQ place called Reggie's that is making a stir, and a place that I love called Pink Corner, right at the triangle, that serves authentic West Indian food (Rotis) and American food, and awesome homemade ice cream. There's also the Tourist Trap, near Salt Pond, that we're very fond of.
The Donkey Diner has new owners and is getting some crumby reviews on their breakfast.
Food is expensive. We bring alot with us. There's a ribs place in Cruz Bay called Candi's (near Starfish) that is very, very reasonable and yummy.
I don't know any answers to your other questions, but I'm sure others will chime in.
Congrats on your upcoming trip!

A floating houseboat, really!! Wow, it seems as though there are some changes...Great! !! Too bad about Donkey Diner, I used to love their breakfasts and I wanted to replace my husbands T-shirt which is pretty beat :). Will check our Pink Corner for sure- I love Rotis- and Reggie's too! Thanks for the suggestions- I'm getting more excited by the minute!!

We usually bring the basics- coffee, peanut butter, bread, crackers and some spices- I see where people even bring frozen meat but I've not gone that far-even though prices are crazy- it seems like work and that it might be a hassle with TSA and customs. We don't even like to check our luggage- but usually do when we travel to the islands cause we have a bag of food stuff! I'll have to start thinking about that I guess!

There is music at the Beach Bar Sunday afternoons, but not the jazz you remember; Steve Simon has relocated to Charleston, SC. HOWEVER... he will be playing at the Beach Bar, St John on March 31.

Steve Simon to Play Jazz
Date: Mar 31 2013 - 4:00pm - 7:00pm
After a four-year absence from his beloved St. John, renowned Jazz clarinetist Steve Simon is coming home for Easter and will celebrate his return with a free concert. He will be performing with his world-renowned Jazz band The Jazz Islanders.

Not sure when you are going but InnerVisions playing at High Tide on Thursday nights is amazing. Also I was at Pickles two weeks ago and had a great lunch!!
Iguana Grill is new across from Woody's - fun place to people watch while they walk down the street. And Sam and Jakes in the Marketplace where Starfish is makes the best sandwiches to take on a boat or to a beach!!!!

It will be a treat to hear Steve's band - I'm sure it will be a great time with a good turnout! We will plan to check out Inner Visions as well....just not familiar with the High Tide? I love this forum!!! Thank you so much for all the good info!
