Need help with question??

Post by Hawaii »

Hi all - Well, I am sure alot of us have been in this situation so am asking for advise. On our last trip our then 14 year old son developed a nasty "rash" that was somewhat painful  Luckily, I had put A&D or some type of ointment in our suitcase. He also had brought long underwear which helped but would like other ideas for this trip? Is there a type of swim trunk to purchase that will prevent this from happening?? I guess he could bring his under armour long underwear but any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Ah yes, my husband developed a terrible case of that during our first trip.

A charter captain told him to always rinse that area with fresh water after leaving the beach if he intended to wear his trunks the rest of the day.

Our friend then gave him a pair of what he calls sliders, which are tight fitting under armor (or other brand) tight, short shorts to wear under trunks that keep everyting "close and tight" so nothing rubs skin against skin.

hubby and the other men in my travelling party every trip to the beach. Hubby got his various pairs at Dicks Sporting Goods.

This used to happen to my nephew as well. In fact, it happened on St. John. In the past few years he has bought super light swim trunks from Zumiez or even PacSun. They are so light weight they dry literally in minutes. They hold almost no water. No rash since.
Also, I searched this site and didn't have luck finding a conversation people recently had (last couple of months). I think it was embedded in a trip report. Someone mentioned going to Chelsea Drug and the lady behind the counter wasn't much help, but another clerk nearby directed them to an item there. It wasn't A&D, but I think it was another name brand of zinc oxide like A&D. Maybe someone else recalls which link that conversation took place. They said it worked wonderfully.
I have sympathy for your son. It can really slow a person down from having fun - - and it hurts!

Quiksilver makes board shorts that have a Dobby fabric lining that prevents chafing.

There was a recent trip report where the same problem happened and they went to Chelsea Drugstore and the pharmacist recommended some ointment and they said it was unbelievable - I'll see if I can find the name

Pia, Minde Hankins reported that this was a good product that had been recommended on island.

Yep, a very similar product to what hubby has. I am getting the same for the little guy before next trip.

Yes, Caldesene helped my daughter ALOT. There's also a product for runners called Bodyglide http://www.bodyglide.com/ that I've heard works as well.
I'm interested in those jammers - they're to be worn underneath swim trunks? Or in place of swimtrunks? My hubby has had this problem, but I don't think those would be particularly flattering....

Ha ha! Under. The ones my husband has are really lightweight, the material is super thin, stretchy and silky. And one pair is white....that would make for an interesting beach sight if worn alone!

Ah yes, the dreaded friction rash...and I'm betting he got it on his inner thighs...big time pain for sure...experienced it several times myself, especially after we'd go somewhere like Salomon or Leinster, beaches that required a long walk in a wet bathing suit afterward.

All the ointments and preventative measures (underarmour, body glide, etc.) mentioned above are good...i'd also a fan of Cortizon cream if it ever happens again and recommend simply putting an extra pair of light, jogging shorts in his backpack...after he's done swimming, just duck behind a tree and change...I do that because I don't like adding another layer under my bathing suit even it's like underarmour.

Definitely worth avoiding. Good luck.
It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow

Wow - You guys are great!! We will probably just bring the underarmour with us in case it happens and maybe go with a better drying swimsuit. When we were there last I think I did bring A&D or Cortizone and it took care of the problem within a day or two while also wearing his long underwear under his swim trunks. Glad he is no seeing this post, not sure an almost 16 year old would appreciate me talking about his under garments  Thanks again!!

JJ Shaw - Great picture of your son. Yes, you are right good thing they do not read this - ha ha. I am 100 percent positive my son will not wear speedo's by themselves, in fact , not sure he will even wear them under the bathing suit. Luckily, he is used to his baseball underarmour pants that I think will work. His cousin is a swimmer so can probably get a pair of his to take just in case he becomes desperate  It is amazing how many people out there have had this problem so glad we brought the ointment with us last time.

LOL!!! We titled each of the days, on our first trip. I remember Blaine titling one "Back, Balls and Bug Bites."
He was a miserable boy!
