Handicapped Parking Permits - Rental Cars
Anyone know if we can use my husband's handicapped parking tag on our rental jeep in St. John? He's got emphysema which prevents him from walking long distances but didn't know if we can use the tag from out of state or if he could get one from somewhere on island by showing his permit.

You can use it. We didnt have much luck finding hcap spots though. We usually ended up parking at Slimmans. Good luck

Yes, you can use your hang tag. We had fairly good luck using the one next to the ferry dock. There are also spaces at Trunk, Cinamon and Hawksnest. There are probably others on the island that wedon't know about.
We got two tags. We leave one in our car at the airport and take the second one on the trip.
Have a great trip

Thanks all, I'm not as concerned in town, as I just drop him off at whatever restaurant or place we're headed and I park in Mr. Sutton's lot, I was hoping for a better spot for us at the beaches. Especially since I'm the one schlepping all the beach chairs, cooler and snorkel gear onto the beach. I try to let him pace himself.

Good question mrsc! We'll be bringing DH's handicapped parking pass to see if it helps. (He has cancer and is wiped out and weak with the 3 years of treatments he's had.) Luckily I have 2 teenagers to help me schlep stuff; unfortunately there are some favorite beaches that we will probably skip, like Salt Pond Bay. But just being together on STJ will make us all happy.

Just returned yesterday and used HC hang tag all last week. Best luck was the one at the First Bank just across from Woodies. Next was the one at Customs just in front of the place which is inside the lot across from the Post Office. This is a little far up to Lime Inn and that street but OK for Wharfside.Taxi Drivers use the one immediately adjacent to the ferry. Tried to pull one out of the spot as he had no HC showing and the cop came owner and actually said to me. " he has one too ". That was crap, and I know it.
Unfortunately, the 1 SINGLE HC spot at Trunk and Cinnamon was taken every single day by 9 AM. I did inquire as to whether an employee wa using it but only got the sucking of teeth in response. At Cinnamon, you can get a pass to drive all the way down to the beach to unload, then come back and park, and then go back to reload. Just make sure there is a regular spot to park in after you have dropped off the group. There is a HC spot right in front of the new Pavillion at Maho. there used to be a HC spot at Francis but it is not there any more.
Within the next month I will be writing to the National Park Office in Cruz Bay to inquire when they are going to make more HC spots available at the beaches. There are parking spots for 9 taxis at Trunk, and one handicapped car. mind you there are no handicap access taxis on St John. They had to fashion a pile of luggage on the ground to get me up into the cab. Hope there was nothing breakable in the people's luggage they threw on the ground for this purpose.

Let us know when you want to do this. We'll jump in with you. I can help you by providing some requirements from the Americans with Disabilities Act.
