Hi all: The aluminum-filled epoxy casting material showed up on Wednesday. On my first try, I became impatient with the slow curing in our cool basement, as slow moving leaks of epoxy threatened the felt of our pool table, so I threw it in the oven to speed up the cure. It turned out that this caused the material to shrink, putting about an eighth of an inch warp into the map. There were also craters along many of the ridges, due to trapped air bubbles. Chalk that one up as part of the learning curve. Housebound with the blizzard (about 26 inches of snow so far), I tried again last night with better jigging around the mold, and put an electric hot pad on top to gently speed the cure along. I also used a toothpick to dislodge air bubbles just after the pour. This time it came out great; perfectly flat, and with only very small pinhole voids that will fill with the first coat of primer. The 3D maps come with a rigid backing of 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. The very fine lines from the melted plastic filament of the original 3D printer came through with high fidelity, and look for all the world like topographic contour lines, a cool effect. So far, two of the four folks who have stepped up have actually sent me a payment via Paypal, so those will ship out on Monday. The price for one of these is $100, plus $14 for Priority shipping. I have enough material to make a total of nine, although we will need a second one ourselves. I can make one map a day, given the overnight cure. Here's a photo of the (unpainted, unframed) "finished product":

Neato! Looking at this, I suddenly understand why Bordeaux Mountain Road follows that strange semicircular path. It's following the rim of that sudden drop-off to the Carolina flats below.

Which brings me to a more or less unrelated question that I've been puzzling over when I look at villa listings. What exactly does "Upper Carolina" mean? Is it the whole mountain rim, all the way around that circle? Or is it just the northern part?

I was initially reluctant to go there, since if the prices in her gallery were any guide, I didn't think that they would sell here. After some negotiation, though, we have settled on a price of $385 painted, with a brass nameplate and a white-washed ash frame, as per the photos at the beginning of this thread. If anyone is interested, you can PM me.

Dreamshark: My understanding of Upper Carolina was that it was the development north of Centerline on the way down to Coral Bay, where you see a bunch of mailboxes. There are a number of villas up there, including a stretch of estate road humbly nick-named the "Majestic Mile".
