Re: snorkeling death at waterlemon
So many thoughtful, caring comments. These posts have convinced me to buy some snorkel vests or belts prior to our up coming trip, and to nag everyone into using them (am certain there will be some eye rolling). Small consolation to the man's family but this discussion may convince others to be more careful and help to prevent another tragedy.

Hubby and I will be on island for the first time in July. We talked about this yesterday and he said "if" we decide to snorkel Waterlemon that we will have some sort of floatation device. There is no reason to risk your life just because you "know" you are a good swimmer. My heart goes out to this precious family.
Just another day for you, you and me in Paradise...

My family made fun of me wearing a snorkel belt when going around Waterlemon but I was mighty glad I had it when I developed a foot cramp working in those currents around the back side, so was able to more easily tread water while I worked it out.

Like you all, I am saddened by this event.
I'm in complete agreement with the last few posts. I liken myself a strong snorkeler. But I wear an inflatable vest when I go out to Waterlemon. I don't inflate it, but could easily do so if I got tired or became distraught. DW and I bought them years ago and take them on every trip.
I don't wear one in shallow waters (like Leinester), but like the comfort of knowing that an emergency won't have to end in a tragedy as I venture out to deeper waters or further from land.

Snorkel vest was easily the best thing I bought before my trip to STJ last year. It just makes you so much safer and you can relax even more knowing you have the help if you need it. Only way it holds you back is if you want to dive down deeper.
