Gallows Point Seaview Cottage

Post by jaybfloyd »

Hi all,

We just booked this place for July and can't wait! Has anyone stayed there? Are the telephone poles really an eye sore when looking at the sunsets?
We are also debating on renting a car or not. I've been to the island twice previously but have never stayed in Cruz Bay but found that this is where we spent most of our time. I figured we may just get a taxi to Coral Bay one day for Skinny Legs or the Tourist Trap. We want to visit the north shore beaches each day and are wondering if it's cost effective to just cab it everyday to the beach or rent a jeep. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

I would rent a jeep. You will have a hard time getting a taxi to take you out to Coral Bay, and it will be practically impossible to find a taxi to bring you back to Cruz Bay. You would probably have to hitchike or take the unreliable VITRAN. Taxis only wait for passengers at Caneel, Trunk and Cinnamon (and maybe the Westin?). At every other beach you would have to hope to flag one down, which is a hit or miss proposition. Here is a rate sheet for the taxis:

Remember that the fares are per person, each way.

The cottage looks cute. If the telephone poles bother you, you could always walk down to Frank Bay and watch the sunset from there. IIRC there is a bench, or you could sit on the seawall. It's a great, unobstructed spot to watch the sunset.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Our last trip to St John was our 19th visit to the island. We have always stayed at Gallows and in a variety of Ocean View units. Honestly, I have never even noticed there was an electric pole of any kind. I'm sure there must be I just have never noticed it. You'll be astounded by the views --You will definitely enjoy the property. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is always helpful and polite. The views are wonderful form any unit. Hope you have a great time

Thanks dhanc1 but we're not staying at Gallows Point. This cottage is across the street from the resort all by itself. The telephone poles are along the road between the resort and the cottage. It's not a big deal. I just wanted to know if it would obstruct our views considerably.

I have not stayed there, but I have been eyeing it for awhile. Will look forward to your reports.

I agree with Liamsaunt and would rent a jeep for at least a few days of your trip. We stayed down the hill in Franks Bay in November for 10 days and rented a jeep for ~5 days. We taxied to Trunk and Caneel to hike to Honeymoon; and hiked out to Solomon. We were two, if your party is larger, a car may be more economic all around.

enjoy your trip.

I agree, I think you need to rent a Jeep for all the reasons Becky described. Sounds like you're already convinced though!

Yes, I'm convinced. Thanks everyone!

We have 4 in our party so we'll probably try and get the 4 door Wrangler for luggage room.

Also, if anyone has stayed there and have pics, I'd love to see them. Seeing the same ol' same ol' on all the websites. Want to get it from the horse's mouth. :)
