The quality of the sourcing on the "wealthy individual with a strong interest in preservation" rumor previously posted just went up several notches:

"Lynda Lohr of the St. John Source contacted the Campgrounds' owner, Stanley Selengut, who professed not to know much other than to say, "“The only clue we’ve had is it’s a wealthy conservationist who wants a one-family house. It’s a wild rumor and not substantiated."

Short of either the old or the new owners releasing a statement on the sale, even a rumor from Mr. Selengut is very welcome news. It's a shame that the lease wasn't extended, but any one-family home would be immensely better than any other conceivable outcome. Perhaps they could host fundraisers there for Friend's of the Park....

All the best,

Kevin

I thought the campground was within the boundaries of the park? Wrong? If not wrong, doesn't that affect what kind of development can go down?

The only control the National Park might have is over development that extends into the water (docks, etc.), however, there would be major St John opposition to large-scale development that would certainly make it challenging to acquire all the necessary permits.
There might be another outcome even better than a single-family house: a REAL eco-resort that dealt properly with their water and sewage, for instance. (i like to think of what a young person who doesn't need a personal profit could do, as far as demonstrating how to do it right.)
