Starfish Market changed my food plans & The Boss in Harford!
Starfish Market changed my food plans & The Boss in Harford!
I just visited http://starfishmarket.com/PDF/Circular10302012.pdf , and I am now totally changing my plans. Why would I bring chicken breasts when you can buy it for $2.49/lb! The prices for food in STJ are MUCH less than I was expecting! I will still bring a block of ground beef, a few steaks, and some bacon in the Polar Bear Cooler. But, I am bringing much less than I expected to bring. I figure I will use the cooler to keep my beverages cold!
P.S. Bruce Springsteen was FANTASTIC on Thursday night in Hartford, CT!

I agree with both points...I'm not going to bring as much food as I originally thought after reading information in this forum...and my husband downloaded the hartford Bruce show this morning! Pink Cadillac....we see him in KC on 11/17

Hartford was a great show! One more for me this year in Denver!

And goat meat for $3.99 a pound! I wonder where that comes from. I had goat on Anguilla and Turks & Cacios but it was at restaurants, I didn't see it for sale in the stores.
My mom commented that produce was often cheaper on STJ (in the winter) than at home in PA.
Snacky types of food is where the sticker shock kicks in.

I have no idea whatsoever, on preparation of a meal featuring goat. Afraid my meal would be Baaaa aaaa aaaa aaaaad! If anyone has a recommendation, I'd try a curried goat meal...

Yesterday, I paid $2 (on special) for that same Welch's juice at my local grocery store.
The goat curry on Provo, T&C was good. The stewed goat on Anguilla, not so much. Lots of bones and it tasted like a barn smells. I grew up eating a lot of wild game so I am used to different tasting meats but I don't think I need to try goat again.

In addition to sticker stock for snack foods, fish can be off the charts, but bargains can still be found. Tilapia dropped from $3.99 to $2.99 per pound at Starfish last week, which was amazingly inexpensive, but salmon, tuna, grouper, and snapper there will set you back $20-$25 per pound. If anything belongs frozen in your cooler, and you like fish, that's what you might want to plan on bringing. The Fish Trap has a fish market, and there is also the guy with the white cooler across from the customs office in Cruz Bay, but caution and local advice are required if you do any fishing; ciguatera is a real risk with larger predator fish.

PA Girl, where did you have goat in Anguilla? I had some kind of goat stew at Straw Hat and it was great! My son liked it too. That was before they moved. Anguilla was our previous favorite island before we came to STJ.

Dome, yes, bony is a good description. I've only had goat on St. John, curried, at Sogo's, and it's very good. I think I'll just stick with what I know and get it there again, though I was thinking we'd probably have one rainy night when we wanted to spend some quality time in the kitchen, in January.
I guess we'll spend it making something we already know will be good

It was at the Anaconda hotel restaurant in 2011. Overall, we really liked the restaurant and all the other dishes that night .
We really enjoyed Anguilla but unfortunately, the water was so rough, I could only get in 3x over a 10 day stay. (And got beat to a pulp those times) That was a major disappointment and sort of turned us of from returning during the winter again. We chalked it up to bad luck but then the locals told us it was typical for Jan/Feb. We do hope to return during the summer in the future.
We loved our meals at the Straw Hat. My 40th birthday dinner was there!

Sometimes I wish villas came with things like slow cookers. I'd totally make a goat stew if I could leave it to slow cook while we are at the beach all day...PA Girl wrote:And goat meat for $3.99 a pound! I wonder where that comes from. I have to admit, we usually bring a stocked carry-on full of frozen food. Not so much for the savings (although it usually is significant as we purchase quality/quantity and vacuum pack things ourselves to make preparation easier) but sometimes the quality looks a little iffy and we prefer things like free range organic chicken, etc., that we don't really see on STJ (I don't even want to know what it costs there if they do have it). We love visiting Jospehine for fresh ingredients (that is one fabulous farm!), and Ruth at St. John Spice for spices (I think curried goat would be delish and her curry is the best!) The beans, basil (for things like shrimp pesto), and lettuces are all so delicious at Jospehines.
As for fish, when you can buy fresh tuna and swordfish steaks on special at Wholefoods for $10/ lb, and freeze it, I consider that worth bringing since you are allowed a carry on free of charge. Some people like to cook, some like to eat out. No judgement here, but If I'm paying for a villa with a view and a well outfitted kitchen, I'd rather make what we love and be prepared. I enjoy cooking, and some of the salads we have encountered on island have been downright scary.
