St. John newbie groceries question

I wound up shipping a box ahead of time to Connections with our snorkel gear, toiletries, some snacks (peanuts, potato chips, etc.) and also coffee. I just can't see spending so much $$$$ on dunkin donuts coffee on St. John while I can just ship coffee from my favorite local coffee shop. I sent it USPS priority and it arrived 4 days later. I will probably spend more money for having it sit there for several weeks vs. the actual shipping - LOL!

We always stop at Bayside in Cruz Bay..I think the prices are better, even though they have no where near the items you will find at Starfish..They still have a pretty well stocked store..

We were parched by the time we landed and stopped and grabbed bottled water! After we collected our jeep we went to STJ Ice and got the big jug to use for refills all week.

I know I've seen it here before, but I can't find it now. Where is St John Ice exactly? Will be heading there after we leave Starfish for groceries.

So, can you not drink tap water at the villa? Our villa says it has a UV water filtration system, that type of system kills bacteria...problems would arise if we lost power though, so I'll make sure to pick up water. But, we won't have gallon jugs with us, so we wouldn't be able to go to SJ ice? Starfish market must have water by the gallon, so we can get 3-4 and fill them up at SJ ice when we're in town. I am curious if the tap water is ok. I'll have to contact the villa manager and ask...we sure wouldn't want to chance a monte zuma revenge type deal while on the rock!!

Is a case of individual water bottles that expensive? What is the price for a case of individual water bottles? I dont want to spend time going to fill up water jugs etc unless the bottles are ridiculously expensive~

No, water isn't that expensive, but there's no (or little) recycling. I drink a lot more water while active and don't like to drink the cistern water where we stay, so we refill our water bottles with gallons of water bought at starfish. Now we'll reduce our plastics even more, by refilling those gallons at St. John ice.
I think the cistern water is safe, but it sleeves me out a bit, so I cook with it but don't drink it.

We will be making our 10th trip soon. We've never taken any more food than just travel food. Yes food is more expensive than in KC, but in the scope of the trip, it isn't that lg an expense. Air tickets from kc, nightly lodging and car rental make grocerys pale in comparison. Then again it's just the 2 of us, and we cook simply while we're there.

This is our 11th trip and we don't bring anything to eat anymore. We have 6 of us and we pack 4 of us in 3 carry-ons plus a dive bag. We found out over time we over planned...over thought and over packed. The choices in the grocery stores rival the states and some have better/varied offerings unique to the island and that's part of why we're here. Higher prices...perhaps, but it's vacation and only a week or 10 days of higher prices for paradise. We eat in and we eat out...just depends on how we feel and what the new day brought our way for that day. Relax and enjoy...the quicker one embraces Island Time, the easier to make that transition.

Hahaha, I get what you're saying bigcheeze and my family could really use some of that Island Time...I don't know what that feels like yet, but I know we're going to like it!
