Funny this is a topic today.
We are leaving next week for SJ and I went to my hairdresser as I always do before our caribbean trips and said, now mind you, my hair is already short, CUT IT SHORT! Well, it's short, so no worries about blow drying, frizzing etc. Just a maintenance free head for 10 days. That is one of the pleasures of SJ., no one cares.
On another note, I did not get my color done as it would be stripped out by all the sun and water, but I have a great root cover up for grey hairs. I mentioned to my husband that I had ordered product on line, and that it had not come yet and I was getting a little concerned. He answered, who cares of your grey, nobody knows you where we are going, or cares if you have grey hair. Well I do, but he's right!

Lisa, I use Bumble & Bumble too, the styling lotion. I also use nexus weightless leave-in condtioner, which I put in first and then about 10 minutes later spritz in the B & B. (My husband says he prefers the wilder and out-of-control look.) The ball cap at the beach works real well. I think we just can't win...those of us with curly want straight and those with straight want curly. I think we can all agree that the grey has got to go. Ali~

I have basically wavy hair and between the soft water at the villas in St. John and the sun, my hair lightens up to a gorgeous color and my hair looks great EVERY DAY. Everyone in my group was very jealous! I just get out of the shower and run a brush through it and it dries into lovely soft curls all on it's own. I think I have to move there, just cause my hair looks so good!!

Yes, Waterguy - that's my husband's way if dealing with the humidity too.

I actually do love the wild-child-hippie look of my youth - it's a nice departure from my current prissy anchor-woman look  (I just don't want it looking fried & dried)

Rock On...
Peace,

Lisa

I SOOOO empathize with the drizzy hair problem (just take a look at my avatar which is taken en route to Soggy Dollar) . I don't think there is one single product that can tame the beast known as curly hair in a humid Caribbean environment. I've come to the conclusion that it looks "wild and carefree" (at least that's what hubby says :D ) to match my attitude on the islands!

What does seem to help with the "straw hair" is to make sure you wash off your hair with regular water after getting in salt water. I bring a water spritzer bottle with me in case there isn't a shower around. It really helps to not leave the salt water in your hair.

I'd say just pull it all back if you can.
I usually didn't worry what looked like, then I saw the pictures- yikes!

Another smart thing to do is to completely saturate your hair in the shower before getting in the salt water or chlorinated pool. Keeps the hair from getting brassy.

I have the opposite problem from a lot of you--my hair is baby fine. This means it gets really, really tangled when I am snorkeling. I bring down Johnson and Johnson detangling spray--it's meant for babies, but it's the only thing that will help me get a comb through my hair. I also rinse the salt out after I am done snorkeling, we keep gallon jugs of water in the back of the jeep for this (and for John's feet).

To control frizzies, I use a product from Rusk called wired.

I can't stand to have my hair touching my neck when it is humid, so I never blow it out, or even use a dryer, I just let it air dry and then throw it into a clip. Last year I chopped my hair into a pixie cut before the trip so I would not have to deal with my hair at all. I don't think I am going to go to quite that extreme this year, but it is tempting...

Actually, I have wavy hair like Paula and the Caribbean is GREAT for it! I use conditioner, then Bumble and Bumble styling creme and it turns out fabulous waves and curls I love it!

lisa, was on st. john last month, it was hot, and a little muggy. didn't bring a blow dryer, and relied on DE-FRIZZ, a bumble & bumble product. put a little of that on, then used their CURL CONSCIOUS. and let it dry. villa had a hair dryer, so i finished it off for a few seconds, fluffed it up, and my blonde curls looked great. of course, i wore a floppy straw hat most of the day to shade my blonde complexion. when i went in the water (salt pond, little maho, lamshur), i simply scrunched it, let it dry, and re-fluffed. bumble and bumble, a boon to curls.

Thanks everyone! I think I will get the Bumble & Bumble DeFrizz & the Curl Concious or the Styling Lotion...put them on, scrunch it up & be a care-free hippie-flower-child :D
Peace,

Lisa
