American Airlines???

Post by BAILEYBAY »

Someone on the forum mentioned that AA is filing bankruptcy. I have been checking fares for awhile now for April 2013 and AA has the best price and we could fly from our home airport and not have to drive 2 1/2 hrs to Indy or Detroit. But I am afraid to pull the trigger because of what "might" happen concerning the bankruptcy. What are your thoughts? Its good times and a price of 525 round trip. Help.......

Hard to say what's going to happen in a year, you might be flying on U.S. American Air by then. If I were you, I'd go ahead and "pull the trigger" on this one. Wrose that could happen, they refund your money....more probably you wil fly on the airline with a different name is all.

AA is the latest in the conga line of legacy airlines to go through Chapter 11 and is currently trying to reorganize. Odds are they are going to come out either a little scaled down from where they are now (i.e. less capacity/fewer flights) or will merge with another airline (US Air being the current favorite). Either way, it's a fairly safe bet that they won't disappear all together (they entered Chapter 11 on their terms with I believe about $9 billion in cash), but you definitely run the risk of fewer flights to STT or SJU, so they could very well change your schedule/routing. I'm currently holding some tickets on AA to STT for this Fall, but I'd be a little cautious going out to April 2013. Don't know if trip insurance would cover you, but it would be worth looking into. Good luck!

I bought my June tickets back in October before the bankruptcy and nothing changed between the time I bought them and our flight date. Since the bankruptcy was announced so long ago I imagine flights are fairly stable now.

I would go ahead and buy the ticket. AA may be in bankruptcy for the foreseeable future, but odds are very good that they will merge with US Air. If it isn't US Air, then it will be Delta or someone else.

If the price is right then I would go ahead and buy it as well. Chances are slim that you get "squeezed" out of your tickets. This is either AA getting their creditors back in line or they are looking to be bought, either way these things take time and don't "usually" affect the customers to any great deal.

Maryanne - JetBlue has some nice non-stops to STT now. I have booked for Oct any got a great price when I did although I think when I was looking the non-stops only run on certain days.

I also miss the direct flight Logan to STT. Just booked our flights on AA for March 2013. Got a good price of 412.40 PP RT. Just hope they don't change it like they did last year. We ended up setting up camp in the dark at CBC.

AA just announced their new fleet of airplanes, don't think their quitting the business. I'd buy the tickets.
