Canon customer service surprise

Post by EagleRayLover »

We have had some troubles with leakage with our Canon D10s in the past, however We have have always had amazing customer service from them and decided because of this and also because I like the familiarity and the pictures I get with it, i wanted to pick up this camera I wanted to pick up another for this past trip since we would have the boys with us and we sepndmso muchntime underwater. To my dismay last experience after only seven days of use - the camera died. Canon customer service told us to send it back immediately and before we knew it , we had a refurbished one- even before we got an email stating that. I called and said I really thought that since it was seven days old,I really should get a refurbished unit. They said I was 100% correct and they would send a new one. Two days later I got a call and said they had no D10s in stock and would I mind if they sent a D20 instead!!!
The price difference is quite significant so I think that is pretty nice of them! I like companies that take of people!!

Yikes! Now I'm concerned...I am thisclose to buying a Canon D10 because of everyone's amazing pictures. Now I'm on the fence for sure....wondering if it's worth the investment...at least I know they have great customer service, though. :? Decisions, decisions.... :?:

Olympus did the same thing for me two years ago. I bought an underwater camera and it flooded about the 3rd time in the water. I contacted them and since they were out of new ones of the model I had they sent me a newer and better model. Yes, it is nice that yhese companies are willing to stand behind their product. :D

So glad to keep hearing these great stories.

Have had two broken D10s, the second was a replacement. It died on our trip but was 1 1/2 years old at least and over warranty of course. It was "like new" as we had mainly saved it for underwater use. This might have been the first time it was in the water, we aren't sure as we hadn't been snorkeling for two years.

Anyways, taking a shot at returning it just in case. They are sending me a shipping label and we will see what happens.

The upside for Canon is we become a Canon "family." I love how the batteries can be used for any Canon point and shoot. Super convenient for keeping the kid's cameras charged.

We have been a Canon family since about 1973 when I bought my first FTb. My photography prof told us that what you are really buying is the glass. The body is just a box to carry the film (remember film?). I learned that the best "glass" was sold by Nikon and Canon. (There are others like Hasselblad and Leica, but let's stick to a level that a college student could afford.) There is nothing wrong with Nikon. It's just that I started off using Canons and it became a habit. It's like the difference between Ford and Chevy pickups. They are more or less the same price with the same features. It just depends on what you were introduced to in the beginning.

It is good to hear that they are continuing to provide good customer service. It is too bad that they apparently have a problem with the D10. This many people with the same issues in the same place indicates a product problem not a user error problem.

Also disappointed by the Canon leaking problems noted here, because the quality of UW images posted here by Canon users is impressive. Hope the design/build quality of the D20 is better, then they wouldnt have to spend so much time and money on making things right with customers.

I may be in the market for an UW camera and although I have been a Canon guy for 25 yrs, I am looking at the Panasonic TS series, specifically the Lumix DMC-TS4 12.1 MP model (speaking of glass, they use a Leica lens)
I got to use a non-waterproof Lumix recently and was quite impressed with its ability to easily handle difficult exposure conditions in various auto modes.

The d20 design is so much better than the.d10. I am extremely happy with my photos so far, and the seals seem so much tighter. I have 2 d20s and a d10 plus the g12 being used by my group this time. Tomorrow we are planning to have an underwater photo contest to see which takes the best pictures. I am not a huge d10 fan due to the image edge fuzziness as well as the fact that i have had three die on me, but so far I have been impressed with the d20.

Loving our Cannon Power shot 300 with the housing. :D It takes great pix and the housing lets me go deeper than a snorkel camera. I also use the housing during travel. That way I don't have to wory about a case. Thanks Augie for the advise! I will post my Pix with my trip report as soon as I get my act together.
