Place with privacy and viewslike St. John but for less money
We are hoping to go back to St. John next year but realistically it will not happen until 2014. Any suggestions on places in the US that we can go where we can find the same privacy as our villa in St. John? We would be flying or driving from KC. We prefer something warm so that we could enjoy a outdoor private pool. I am not having much luck on my search. In fact no luck at all. Nothing compares to the amazing trip that we just had! Just looking for something to get us through one more year until we can get back there.
try the outer banks pasted post from earlier in year below

we rented an oceanfront duplex on Emerald Isle for the 1st week of june last summer. i think EI is described as the southern outer banks. anyhow, it was really nice, very quiet in the off season. i know there are a few big condo type places, we were near one called Pebble Beach. i was afraid it would be freezing and brought shorty wetsuits, but i think the water was 76 degrees. maybe you could bring wetsuits? we even learned to surf fish, caught flounder, and baby sharks! the waves are pretty big, but good for boogie boards. every morning i could see dolphins swimming while i had coffee, very cool!
this is who we rented our house from:

but there are a few other rental agencies too.
have fun!

I second any positive comments on EI or Bluewater. We'll be there in 10 days. We've rented from Bluewater 4 times now and they're great.
I could get into a whole speech of how I'm starting to like EI better than St John, but that's a story for another time.
It's a beautiful place with just enough to do to keep the kids entertained while having enough nothing to make you feel bliss.
I can provide details as needed

It would be helpful if you mentioned your ballpark budget. Off the top of my head, have you looked into Vieques? It's a beautiful island with lovely beaches and the villas are cheaper than St. John. You could fly into San Juan and then take the ferry over. When John and I went we stayed at the W resort, but there are a decent number of villas available if you wanted a private home.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
We are looking at Culebra for an upcoming trip. We can get to San Juan for a decent price and the house rentals are reasonable.
We went to the far northern end of the Outer Banks a couple of years ago and drove north (no roads, you drive on the beach) and saw some houses that interested me. The downside would be the drive and cost, the rentals are pricey.

I would say around $3k total including airfare from Kansas City.liamsaunt wrote:It would be helpful if you mentioned your ballpark budget. Off the top of my head, have you looked into Vieques? I am doing searches on all of the places mentioned so far. We just got back from a wedding in MD and I have been unable to check any websites while gone. Thank for all of the suggestions so far.
We usually do STJ for 10 days to 2 weeks with airfare from KC for about that budget. That doesn't include food or car gas, because we eat and drive at home too. You just have to look hard, and be frugal. STJ on the cheap is better than luxury anywhere else.Don't always have a pool, but that's ok. And never camped on STJ.
