Sold out flights and crazy high prices, in low season!
Flights out of Atlanta are really high too. Luckily, we booked our flights for August a few months back for $449/pp (Delta, direct flight). I still get the daily alerts from Kayak though and they have been over $600 for a while now, yikes!!
When we went last August our flight and the flight our friends took the next day were all completely full.

For a couple of years now yapta has been powered by kayak. A great marriage in my opinion.
We booked in March for end of Sept. travel from MSP for $475 on Delta....it is now up to $840 or so.

I track prices through Yapta. When planning a trip I'm usually tracking at least 30 or 40 flight options.
I agree though that overall prices are running high right now.
Just so happens there was a piece about this very topic on NPR this evening. I'm afraid there isn't much relief in sight. The article is on their website if you want to read it. Got this new iPad and haven't figured out how to copy and paste the link but it article is titled.

Is it ever more now 
Last year hubby and I paid $340 tax and all...out of Charlotte. This year we decide to take daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandkids! The cheapest we could get tickets out of Clt. was on US Airways...@ $767 each ...OUCH !!! 
That really took a bite out of the funds for trip!! Also, it is on a bigger plane than we have ever seen fly out of Clt. to STT and it is SOLD Out !! Is everybody in the world coming this month ?

Misery loves company. I'm a little relieved to see that for our family trip (first to STJ) end of July that we aren't the only ones paying out the nose for air. I thought I probably made a big mistake when I booked, at over 800 per per....crazy crazy! We are USAir out of little rock . But I see we are in the same boat with lots of you. Nice company, tho.....
We have struggled with this since we missed the first opportunity several months ago. We decided we will be flying into San Juan on Sunday $770.00 for 2(just went up $40.00), catch Cape Air to STT for $550.00 RT for 2. The total will be $1320.00 rt for 2, vs. $1254.00 with AA thru to STT, and flying back with AA we would have to be at STT for the idiotic flight time of 8:10 am (Nu-uh!) Flying this way we can sleep in a little going and coming, and not feel so freakin' rushed...(Thanks AA for thinking of your customers!)

I am seriously considering doing the same thing for February 2013. We are set on an island yet but it will be somewhere accessible from SJU. Am definitely 'sharing the pain' with everyone here. The last couple years have been wonderful with lower prices than I've seen in years for both high and low season. BUT as soon as American went into chapter 11, the fares have SKYROCKETED! They have dropped all but one of their connections thru SJU and greatly curtailed all their other routes as well. It's the old 'supply and demand' saga.
One thing I have found is that if you don't really mind taking a chance and waiting (kind of like 'playing chicken' with them), you can get slightly better fares. You can't wait so long that you get into the dreaded '2 weeks before flight date' period where the seats are jacked up astronomically. BUT, if you can wait between 3 and 4 weeks before leaving, AND you can stay up until about 1am to book, you can grab some ok fares.
Problem with the above though is there are usually only 1 or 2 seats left at those prices so if you're a family of 4, you're going to 'lose.' Plus, with all the flights being cut back so drastically, and some flights leaving before you could possibly make them due to ferries not running until 6am, it cuts your odds back even further.
It's really a shame that one of the other airlines doesn't pick up on this void left by American and jump in with additional flights down to STT--especially from the midwest!

Yes, the airfares are *terrible*. But the blame is to be placed squarely on the airline industry itself, which has been aggressively cutting seats, planes and flights from it's inventory. So there are less of all 3, and prices correspondingly are higher than they've been in a long time, if not forever. USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, among others, have run several stories on this.
Not only are prices sky-high, but your chances of being on a completely-booked overcrowded plane are also very high. It's just not going to be good to be flying anywhere on an American carrier for quite a while.
When fares were good for all those years, the airlines were losing money hand over fist. Now they've severely reduced capacity, and raised prices significantly. And they're making money, most of them.
Doesn't bode well for the future, methinks.
