Snorkeling and hiking in the rain?

Post by NC Brenda »

Hello all. We'll be on STJ in late May, and we are SOOOO excited! I do, however, want to be prepared in case of significant rain. (Longterm forecast shows a LOT of rain/storms, as opposed to typical island rains) In the past we've dealt with overcast skies and shorter rains, and snorkeled through it, but I'm wondering how badly the snorkeling visibility is affected during and after heavier rains or several days of rain. I'm assuming runoff can be a problem, but maybe rocky spots fare better?
Can anyone recommend snorkels that might be less affected by rainstorms?

Also, does anyone hike during/after rains? Usually we wouldn't, but if it's lighter rain, maybe we'll consider it as it will be cooler. I just don't want to ride Mother Nature's slip'n'slide!

Thanks for any advice. If all else fails and it's rain rain rain, we'll be at the Beach Bar. And High Tide. And Shipwreck. Quiet Mon. Banana Deck. Yikes, I hope the weather cooperates because I didn't budget for this!

Hiking in rain

Post by inuny »

We were on island in march during some very cloudy, rainy and cool days. We did a lot of hiking. I wore my rash guard shirt and swimsuit shorts-they dry quickly. Some trails cam be slippery when wet.

Nevertheless, the long term weather forecasts look dismal, but most of the time it just rains for a short period, then the sun comes back out.
