vacation rental- focus on cost

Post by samoka »

Hi all - I am looking for a rental for next Feb. my needs are minimal - a free standing rental - on St. John and CHEAP - my husband passed away recently after a looong illness and I am planning a trip for myself and a girlfriend but need to keep the costs low - I appreciate any help - it is good to be back on the forum.

This one is inexpensive...and kinda neat looking...but you would need a jeep.

samoka,
i am so sorry for your loss. both blue wrasse cottage (up on the costanza road) and sweet spice fit your bill-- as they are relatively inexpensive.
blue wrasse has a LOT of steps and both are laid out in a bit of a funky way-- sweet spice has a pool, but no ocean view and blue wrasse is teeny but has a view of coral bay harbor--
you'd need a jeep for both --samuel cottages in cruz bay might be a good option near town....

Hi Samoka,
We're sorry to hear of your loss. My husband met you in Lincoln a couple years ago. We're 45 year visitors to STJ and know of a few low priced (decent) accommodations and would be happy to share information with you.
If interested please follow up using PM.

I've had my eye on Nancy's Folly through Caribe Havens. It is inexpensive even in high season. Two bedrooms with AC. But their is a caretaker that lives underneath the villa (Nancy). But, in my opinion having a caretaker and local right near you might not be a bad idea.

Samoka - So very sorry for your loss.

I have stayed at, and would recommend, Catch n Keep. The only thing is, you didn't mention if you need separate beds or if you don't mind sharing. Catch n Keep only has a queen bed. It is SO cheerful and bright and the decor is amazing and old time island-y in the best way. It doesn't have AC, but you said February and I'm sure at that time it would be fine without. Judy, the owner, lives on site and she is a complete doll. She also has some furry friends that will come to visit, but only if invited (we tried to get them to live with us, to no avail, when we were there).

We've also stayed at Sail View, Just Enough, Estate Concordia Studios (and perhaps some other budget friendly places I am forgetting) and we would recommend as well. Again, the only thing is you would need to share a the bed. Perhaps if it is an issue you could rent a cot? Lots of places on island rent them.

Edited due to Orchid Court Tennis Cottage being more expensive than I remembered.

Don't know how rustic you were wanting to go, but we've stayed at a small cabana in the lowlands of coral bay that is only $500 per week. It's very basic though - solar bag shower, heat your water on the stove, etc - but it was charming. It's on the grounds of the owners home and they are very sweet. It's definitely not luxury, but being a life long camper, I had no issues with that. Only 1 one room, and one bed. Send me a PM if you want more info.

I am also sorry to hear this news and hope you find the right place. There was a spammer on here that left a comment that has since been removed. Just noting this so people don't get confused -

Happy Mother's day to all of you moms out there!

So sorry for your loss! St. John is definatly such a healing place! I would recomend Cruz Views. (Unit one is where we stayed but it has been renovated and is a good deal more expensive) If you go with the other units you can save, and they have the same price in season or out. We stayed there before the renovation, and thought it was good for the price. It was not fancy, but it was clean, comfortable, convient, has good AC, and you do have a decent view of the water and STT. The pool area is shared, but nice. I loved the saline pool. When we go on the cheep we will def. stay there agian.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - we ended up with 2 more joining us - we decided on Starlit Escape in Coral Bay - we stayed there before so we are familiar with the location/house - and there is enough roomin anyone else decides to join us - seems like a long time to wait - but summers in NH are so nice I just can't leave!

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words - although there will always be a part of me missing I know the pain will become tolerable - especially with a week on the rock to look forwad to!

Try Privite Homes. They have one called Cactus Flower,
but there are probably some closer to town.
