maybe if we bombard them with complaints it will help.
Me too (thanks for the link!):

Good morning,

I wish to register my disdain towards the policy, apparently being newly enforced, wherein rental vehicles are prohibited from being transported off of their island of registration. I believe that this is a short-sighted policy that may have unintended negative consequences to the tourism industry, particularly on St. John, and highly recommend a thoughtful and comprehensive review of said policy be undertaken.

Thank you,

After reading this article I'm now not sure can rent a jeep in St. Thomas to take to St. John . Time will tell . . . There goes that plan along with stopping for provisions for the villa . What car rentals in St. John do you regulars recommend ?

I realize that some people will not be happy should this be enforced but this is the way that it always was years ago. You HAD to rent on STJ.

I know that there are now more villas/condos and there will be increased demand on the STJ companies and their fleets but years ago you had no other choice and people managed just fine.

If you want to be there, you will go. Well, at least I will!

What surprised me is that if you bring a vehicle over, you just pay for the vehicle and not the passengers.

If its lost revenue the ferry companies are worried about, they should charge for the vehicle and the passengers. This is what we experienced in Rhode Island, the car was one ticket and the passengers still paid the per person rate for passenger tickets.

Thanks CBama - gonna do the same.

After renting on STJ when we go almost every summer since 2002, I caught a ride back to the airport with someone who rented on STT and it was soooo much easier to do it that way. Car rental company met us at the airport for a quick drop off and we didnt have several hours between villa checkout/car rental return with our luggage and nothing to do.

Not happy about this.

Getting overcharged to get crammed into a van with the added bonus of a nice sticky wad of gum on my daughters new jacket was the last straw for us. We've rented on STT every visit since.

Renting on STT has made it possible for us to come to STJ without the added hassle of the group taxi, which is difficult without car seats for my toddlers. The convenience of getting a vehicle at the airport and renting car seats (and possible stopping at a market before heading over) is what makes it a doable trip for us.

Unfortunately, this puts a crimp in our plans, which is less than two weeks away. It isn't such a big deal for others without young children, but for us it is very important as the thought of having my kids in a van with no car seats is making me queasy, and now it's probably too late to reserve a private taxi.

Yes, I could bring car seats, but we were planning on doing carry on only, and how do you carry on luggage and car seats and have a hand to hold on to your little one?

I am sick and angry about this, but I do thank goodness for this forum as it gave me time to change my plans. I would hate to think of the people who show up on STT to pick up their vehicle and are told they can't take it to where they are staying.

I also emailed the USVI dept of tourism and have already received a reply back stating they are working closely with the DMV and that there is a 60 day grace period for existing reservations for rentals on St Thomas.

My reservations just exceed this time frame...so still waiting to determine course of action.

I just hung up from Gov. deJongh's office, asking for assistance. They were unaware and said they were calling DMV. I am hopeful.
