9 days to Coral Bay: Work

Post by Xislandgirl »

Single digits!!!
This will be a quick one because as the topic suggests, I have work to do.

Getting everything done before a trip is always a challenge. Especially when you are dealing with nervous brides. The meetings and phone calls. The spreadsheets with tasks and deadlines for the couple and for me are staring at me, silently cursing me for leaving. I will leave however with things undone. I will get on the plane and remember that one thing that had to be done that I forgot to do.

I will read and reply to a text or email while on the beach because, well, umm, just because. It will NOT affect my relaxation, in fact it will add to it because it one less thing to worry about when I get back.
I won't spend hours working but I will do a little work here and there. It is just part of who I am and I am ok with that!

I know exactly what you're dealing with -- I'm a wedding photographer, and I have the same anxiety/guilt about unplugging from my business/clients.

One thing I've been doing the past few visits is to pay my sister to act as my virtual assistant while I'm gone -- she checks my email once or twice a day, I give her a few standard email responses to use, and if there's a real emergency that can't wait until I get back, she drops me a line.

It works really well -- I can leave my work behind and chill out, knowing that nothing's being neglected in my absence.

I know the feeling as we own our own business and have 15 employees so leaving is sometimes traumatic for me, BUT it is a necessity and we go in our off season of course and I LET IT GO for 10 days!!! I keep in contact by email only if needed!!! And they can contact me of course if an emergency arises, but to email/text on the beach.....NO WAY!!! [/i]

Working for yourself often means you are always working! My husband checks email once in the morning and once at the end of the day. He would agree with you X, 1 minute to answer a question or take care of a problem can save a mountain of stress later. The people at our office are great at handling things while we are away and only call if when absolutely necessary.

I don't have a problem with it, my dad was self-employeed and sometimes having to deal with business issues in the off-hours, even on vacation, was a part of life.

my husband cannot relax on vacation unless he is in touch with his lab.... so he generally gets up early and has coffee and if we have wireless he'll sit out on the deck and answer emails , deal with whatever-- sometime he has to take a few calls-- but honestly he'd be a basket case if he couldn't check in with some regularity..... me, i am much more able to let it go-- but still do like to check in and make sure there are no crises lurking..... (and people know how to get me if the have to... but they are usually pretty good about not doing that!)
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

I totally understand. I never check in to my work when I'm on vacation but John feels that he needs to do so. It used to drive me crazy, but I came to realize that if he didn't check in and do the occasional conference call we would not be able to go as often or stay as long as we do. So now I write in our journal and edit our vacation photos while waiting for him to finish up. Unless there's a call happening, it's only a few minutes in the morning. Never on the beach, we don't bring anything electronic to the beach, just because I'd feel nervous leaving expensive devices behind during our long snorkels.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
