Another Lameshur Question
So, we love Francis for the calmness, turtles, etc. Hawksnest for the elkhorn, Maho for the silly little fish that follows you around, Oppenheimer for the beauty from the beach.
We've never been to Lameshur, but see so many of you love it. What is the draw to this beach that is "off the beaten path"? Coral, fish, other sea life?
Is the road one of the "off limits" parts of the island in a rental? Can any 4 wheel drive get you there or does is have to be a short wheel base one, like the simple jeep?
Thanks for the info...hoping to try a few new beaches this time around

a jeep will be fine-- it used to be off limits (years ago?) i don;t think so now-- it's paved over most of the roughest parts. i love it for the quiet. there is usually an octopus to be found and squid dancing around the rocks....i also love the 'deep-ish' water snorkel out yawzi point (the point between big and little lameshur walk out that trail and you will find a put in off to the left-- a little cove-- snorkel up the point-- it's really nice....if you are adventurous and a good swimmer-- swim all the way around! (it's a long swim... so be aware of that....
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

We like it because it's remote and quiet, has shade for Blaine to sit and read, and interesting (though not the best) snorkeling, an interesting walk (I don't call it a hike) to ruins to Yawsi point is nearby.
Our MO on the last couple of trips is for us to establish a base, where Blaine sits and reads, and then I take off snorkeling within sight of him or take walks and look around. Little Lameshur allows us both to do our thing.

It's nice and quiet cause it's so far out. We got there about 11am and it was empty...by 1pm it was pretty busy. The road is bumpy but do-able in any jeep. There is shade like Minde says (which is necessary for us as well) and lovely calm waters. Ok snorkeling, but most of all, a nice quiet spot.
all you have to do is smile, smile, smile
We go to Lameshur and Little Lameshur mainly because of the snorkeling...two of the best snorkels on the island I think! We are avid snorkelers and do a 1-3 hour snorkel most mornings. The Yawzi Point snorkel is awesome. You do have a very short hike from Little Lameshur to get there and it is well worth it. We saw turtles, a spotted eagle ray and an octopus there this year.
We park at Lameshur and do a rock scramble to get to the Tektite snorkel. The "scramble" is a bit challenging so be aware of that. For that snorkel swim to the left after you can't hike anymore and snorkel around the point. This is one of our son's favorite snorkels because the rocks on the shore around the point rise up steeply form the water and is so cool. You should be a good swimmer for both of these snorkels.
We also like to park at Little Lameshur and hike to the petrogylphs from there. We really look forward to cooling off with a lovely dip in Little Lameshur upon our return! The water is shallow way out and incredibly clear and blue.

Regarding your question about the road being off limits - we rent a Jeep Liberty from Bougainvillea and are allowed to drive to Little Lameshur. The road 3 years ago) was challenging in a few spots, but we carefully picked our way around the ruts and rocks, and didn't have a problem. We like Lameshur because it was a nice quiet spot without crowds in May. There is plenty of shade for those of us who can't take much sun, and a picnic table in the shade too. We take a picnic lunch and make a day of it there. There are mongoose there, who made off with our sandwich bag on one trip, so be sure to secure your food from those little bandits.
I seem to recall there were sandy places to get in the water along the beach. I don't like getting in over the big rocks, so I try to find a sandy spot to get in.
We had good snorkeling there on one trip, and murky water on another trip, so it depends on the conditions. We have see some nice fish there on past trips.
We like to go over to Great Lameshur on the way out. We had a great snorkel there, but the beach was very rocky for getting in, right where we parked. We have hiked to Yawzi Point and done the snorkel where you enter the water in a little cove. That was a very nice snorkel. Just watch out for urchins on your way in the water.
Happy trip planning!

Little Lameshur:
Shade trees, quite a few
Picnic Tables
Long, Flat Sandy bottom well out into the bay
No crowds
Not a home or house in sight from the beach - natural delight
Calm waters if North Shore is rough
Good snorkeling, though well out around each point of the bay
Usually very clear, though sometimes murky
Did I mention no crowds?
Parking literally right at the edge of the beach
One of STJ's best kept secrets, so don't tell anyone!
