Random grocery shopping questions: Feta and Dill

Post by Xislandgirl »

I am going to need to purchase fresh Dill and Feta cheese for a recipe that Chip wants me to make on vacation. I normally don't get too creative with my cooking on vacation but in need these incredients to make the salad.

I can easily bring them in our cooler but just thought I would check to see if I could get them on island.

hi Xislandgirl... well, here is my 2c: I don't *know* if you can get them on the island (but I'll try to remember to look for ya the next time I'm at Starfish/Starfish Gourmet)... but I can guarantee you that if they are available here, they'll be much (much, much, much) more expensive than if you brought them from home. so if it's easy to toss in the cooler, I'd go that route, just for the savings. :-)

(my guess is that dill would be hard to find, but feta will be available, for a premium, at Starfish Gourmet. but I could be wrong!)

I think you'll have to get those ingredients at Starfish, though Josephine might have the the dill.

I know they will be more expensive and that is not really the issue, I just want to know if I can get them :)

gotcha! I actually just called over to Starfish Gourmet and I'm happy to report that I was wrong :-) they do normally carry pre-packaged feta at the Gourmet market (two different types), and they said there is also usually feta in the deli case at the regular Starfish market.

for dill, they said they have it packaged (not fresh) at the Gourmet shop, and sometimes it's available fresh in Starfish Market.

so... like everything on St John, it's not guaranteed that you'll have exactly what you want exactly when you're here, but in this case it sounds like you'll be fine. you have a few options for the feta and "worst case" I think you could get the packaged dill if they don't have the fresh when you're here.

I am bringing the shrimp but we have a small cooler we carryon and it is almost maxed so the more I can get on island the better.

Thanks. I have two pounds of shrimp in the freeze so it is perfect timing. I love Ina's recipes.

I LOVE that recipe! It is so tasty, and really pretty too.

I have purchased fresh dill at Starfish before, it was from Josephine's farm. If Starfish doesn't have any on the shelf when you go, you should check at her farmstand since you are staying in Coral Bay.

It is one of our favorites. Not sure why Chip requested it but since it is so easy to make, I figured keeping a big bowl of it to bring to the beach for lunches is perfect!

Love this recipe. A big fan of Ina Garten! Thinking about making while I am on island. Seems like a perfect dish. Have to remember to bring some of the ingredients down. Such a good wife to make this for Chip.

I make a similar dish but it has basil instead of dill- it may be a viable option if you can't find the dill.

As you are staying in Coral Bay go to Josephine's - half the price than Starfish for the exact same herb (she grows it, they buy it from her and upcharge) I know she sells it but whether it is available is another thing. Feta "normally" not a problem :)
