The oddest things you have seen while in STJ?
In Jan we were at one of our favorite beaches Gibney. We were lucky to have the whole beach to ourselves for about 2 hours. The waves were crashing and the surf was up the most we have ever seen there.
We were both reading when we saw a older couple walking down the beach. They stopped about 20 feet from us and the wife goes in the water. Yep the old guy removes his suit facing us mind you and proceeds to take his time walking in backwards. We both looked at each other in disbelief.
We decided to be crazy and practiced our ballroom dancing right on beach. We packed up and left before he left the water. One visual was enough.

On our trip in november we were "exposed" to a couple of strange things 1) to a topless photoshoot at Trunk, it was late in the afternoon and a woman was posing/frolicking in the waves and on the sand, while her partner was clicking away with the camera, also included the baywatch style wet hair flip and crawling through the wet sand like a cat. (imagine the no see um bites) 2) man wearing a full borat style mankini at lameshur, thong back included.
Same trip we ran into a crowd of women in heels trying to walk down the waterlemon trail, they stopped and asked us how far it was to the sand???

Oddest Thing
Chillin' at JJ's with my daughter when, at the next table, an older woman with a cast on her leg begins to talk (in French) to one of the tree sculptures, then to yell at it because it's not responding, then to hitting it with her fists. My daughter quickly spotted someone she just had to speak to while I sat there trying to ease under the table in case she should decide I was next!

3 yrs ago we saw the oddest wedding at Hawksnest....the groom was wearing a Borat thong (i am noticing this is a theme) and the bride was dressed as a hippie....and there were guests dressed as a hot dog, mustard and other odd things.
Hubby and I just decided it was over our head....maybe we missed a movie or something they were going for

This probably is one of the best threads ever! Good thinking outside of the box!!
In any event, you folks made me "search the old threads" for my trip report from 2007 to share with you now what was probably the strangest things that "we" have seen on island.
To set the stage, we had headed out to Coral Bay. Probably had lunch at Vie's and was heading back to "civilization". Here is what I wrote:
"As we were nearing the intersection where Skinny's is - we came upon a pack of donkeys meandering along the roadway. Before I continue the story, I must issue a "MATURE AUDIENCE ONLY ALERT"! Here goes. Anyway, there I am clicking away - taking my umpteenth photo of donkeys & I spy something in my view finder. I actually see the last donkey of the group kind of catching a "sort of" piggy back ride on the back end of the donkey in front of him (if you know what I mean). I actually had to do a double take & actually thought "should I get a picture of this?" - but, the prude in me said "No way"! - Then the moment was lost & I wished that I had gotten the shot off.
But - here comes the good part. What made the experience even more memorable was the next thing that happened. At that exact same moment, a carload of twenty-something guys was coming up the road in the opposite direction. I know that they saw me with the camera & must have thought that I captured the moment. The next thing we knew - the guy in the passenger seat was leaning out the window, beer glass in hand, laughing & screaming "WooHoo Donkey's Humping!" He looked so happy to be sharing the moment with us. The look of pure joy on his face was precious! I am laughing & smiling as I write this. I swear that if that guy remembers anything about this trip, decades from now - it will be that moment!! We just kept laughing & shaking our heads (which is what I am still doing now)! Too funny!!"
My goodness - 5 years from that event and I can still see that guy hanging out the window, cracking up! And, of course, I still regret not capturing the moment on camera.
Gotta love the "wilds of nature" found on St. John.

oddest thing you have seen
Once while snorkeling in Francis Bay with my daughter, about 9 at the time, she started screaming frantically. She was stung by jelly fish. I paniced too because she was in such pain so I got her out and ran along the beach yelling for help. A man who had been sun bathing saw us. He was laying down with a cowboy hat laying over his private parts. He saw us, put on his cowboy hat and came running over to help us. He was wearing nothing but the cowboy hat!!!

This thread is a hoot. Earlier today, I made my lunch, started reading this thread and thought: I'll have something good to add, all I need to do is look through old trip reports of ours (hard copy) from the last 12 years. I pulled out the files and began eating my lunch.
Well, as it goes, I got all caught up in re-reading those reports and my "lunch break" turned into a two hour foray into archives.
I have nothing to add at this time other than thank you for making me go back and re-read all about our fabulous, romantic and amazing times in STJ from 2000-on.
Wait, there is one story, which I know I've told here before. Takes place wayyyy back in the day. Circa 2000.
Pete and I did the "hike" out to the end of Ditliff Point, back when there was a "do not trespass" sign and a broken chain leading to the path. It was desert like, cacti and the like as flora. We get about half way and find hand cuffs on a tree. Not just ordinary hand cuffs, fur covered hand cuffs. No biggie. We trek on. All the while, I'm wondering "what the H?"
Next thing we notice, as we approach the crest, where you can see the cove best, on the right side: A lovely sail boat. With what? Naked people. Lots of them. (Okay, only one naked guy who had made his way to the beach, but still...). We turned around and "hiked" back.
The two were not related of course but it gave us a flavor for STJ. It was our first year so we figured "anything goes here."
Carry on folks. This is good stuff.

Missing St. John. As always.
I actually was not in St. John when I witnessed this, but I was lurking "and daydreaming" on the Spice Cam (I think a couple of years ago), when I noticed there was a man that looked like he was dead on the beach in front of the little wooden dock. I remember having a conversation on this forum about this man. A lot of us were very concerned that he was not well and "why isn't anyone helping him?"... He was half in the water... we (well I and a few others) watched for a couple of hours, and I think someone was even trying get a hold of Ruth to see if she was there to go check on him! Does anyone remember that?

Tami, I totally remember that conversation, it was around our trip in August '08. I think someone actually tried to call the STJ police to check on him. Wonder if that's the same "homeless" man in an earlier post who went into the water and flopped around like a fish out of water!
Great stories everyone! Keep 'em coming

When we were at Cinnamon Bay, Blaine watched every morning, as a woman left a cabin, walked toward the beach then squatted in the same spot, dug around a little in the sand, and pulled out a ziplock bag with a pack of clove cigarettes and a lighter in it. She'd light the clove, put everything back in the bag, re-bury the bag, then go take a 10 minute walk on the beach. She dropped her butt in the trash near the bathhouse and then go in and shower, then return to her cabin.
That was me! I'd seen clove cigarettes at I think the duty free. We'd both long since given up cigarettes, but cloves are kinda like a cigar....they're a treat. I was sneaking them because I didn't want Blaine to know, and for him to fall off the wagon.
The last day, an old man was standing right by my spot. He must have been wondering what the heck, when I knelt about 6" from him and started digging, pulled the bag out, lit the cigarette, buried everthing and walked away!
He was still standing there when I came back, and said "sneaking a cigarette?" Well, yaaaTHINK???

Best. Thread. Evah.
We've only been to STJ once (so far) and that was about 6 weeks ago. One night we were coming into town, it was dark, we were almost to Jumbie, and we rounded a corner to see a jeep, turned completely over on its side. Dark, nobody else around. We stop, and that's when we heard the guy from inside the jeep, hanging by his seatbelt, yelling for help. We jump out, my hubs pulls him out, there's gasoline everywhere, shattered glass, etc. We are freaking out, the 20-something lone driver is, well, NOT freaking out. He is obviously under the influence (of something) and all he wanted to do was flip the jeep back over and be on his merry way. Uh, ok. Anyhoo, a few people stopped, and eventually we all flipped the jeep back over just to prove to the guy that there was NO WAY he was going anywhere in that jeep. I actually pulled out the cam corder to video the moment he tried to crank it, because I was certain it was going to blow up (it didn't crank or blow up.) We ended up leaving after police (or park ranger or whatever) finally showed up. Side bar: I called 911 twice from my cell phone during the commotion and each time I got the BVI emergency people. They kept telling me to hang up and try again and I might eventually get the St. John emergency people.

Is this the same homeless guy that you guys were describing? When we were on STJ in November we saw him hanging out near the ferry dock weaving hats and then again at Cinnamon walking down the beach furiously talking to himself and stopping to drink from that plastic jug every once in a while.
