Beach and Villa Panoramas

Just got back from our second trip to St. John and thought that others might enjoy some Panorama pictures that I took while there ... Salomon Beach, Jumbie Beach, Francis Bay Beach, Salt Pond Bay Beach and White Bay Beach (on Jost Van Dyke) home to the Soggy Dollar.

Also, a couple of panoramas of our Villa, SummerWind.

This is awesome, especially love the Francis photos.

Question - how did you physically do this? Did you use a tripod to maintain elevation consistency, or did you crop and stitch? I want to try something like this on my next trip and could use advice.

I just did my best to hold the camera at roughly the same angle as I took a series of pictures going around in a cicrle. I tried to make sure that there was something in the overlapping areas of the pictures that the SW would be able to pick up on to see how to stitch things togehter (E.g., the red shirt in the Francis Bay panorama appeared in two adjacent pictures).

The Photosynth web site has instructions on how to stitch things together ... it's all free.

You'll need to get an account on Photosynth, and download some free Mircosoft SW (ICE - Image Composite Editor).

I tried using the sticthing SW that came with my camera, which did a nice job, but I was unable to figure out how to upload it to a web site (E.g., FB) for others to view. Photosynth took care of those problems for me.

Photosynth has a couple of different ways to do things ... as a "Photosynth" (which actually shows the picture borders) and as a panorama. For my purposes, the Panorama looked better. But, someday I'll mess with the Photosynth since that allows Virtual environment pictures that are not in panorama format.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying these panoramas! I planned on doing one for every beach we stopped at, but I guess I was relaxing a bit too much

Had I done my job, I would also have gotten panoramas of Gibney beach (our favorite), Dennis Beach, and of course, Cruz Bay beach (out front of the beach bar!!).

Anyone want to send me down to STJ so I can finish the job right??

Ha! Nice try. You have inspired my thoughts though, and I think I will do one from the ferry dock. Great idea.

We have a small tripod that works well. It folds up small but extends to 42 inches. Great for taking group photos or photos of you and your spouse without needing to ask for help. we paid $20 at Target.
