August?

Post by cliffnchristi »

Hi all!
Are restaurants starting to close up in mid-late August? Thinking of making a trip down, but we've always gone in June. I know we would be taking a chance with hurricanes, but overall how is the weather, bugs, etc in August?

Our fave place is running a 20% off special Aug-October so I'm very tempted to chance it all to go in August! :D

I SHOULD say that August is HORRIBLE and no one should go there during that month...so that my husband and I could have the place all to ourselves! :D

But that would just be mean.

INSTEAD, here's my humble opinion.

We ALWAYS go in August. The sole reason is my job. We will also ALWAYS go in August. Again....my job.

So.

That being said....sure, some restaurants are closed, but there are PLENTY that are open.

Most of the beaches are even more deserted than usual, and sometimes you'll be the only ones on a beach for the entire day!

The weather - sure it's a gamble - but we haven't had ANY issues thus far. (We ALWAYS buy travel insurance, by the way - strongly recommend!!!!)

Anyway, if y'all are there in August, you may see us! 24 weeks and counting!

Mid-August just about everything is open. Late August to early September is when things start to close.

Here's last year's closing schedule for reference:

Thanks for your replies...sounds like we will be fine and most restaurants we like we still be open or don't close at all. Now its just trying to decide if we really "need" to be going. We usually only go every other year and this year doesn't play into the schedule, but it sure is tempting....decisions, decisions!!! LOL!!

Thanks

ALSO remember that it's CHEAPER (villas, some car rentals, etc.) in the off season (a la August). Just in case that helps further your need / want to visit....

I went last August and thought it was great! The weather felt no warmer than July or June to me. Beaches not too crowded, water nice and warm, most places were open. I am planning on coming down this August again. I would buy trip insurance just in case of a hurricane.

We always go in August with no problems. Maybe a restaurant or two closed but still lots of choices. Mainly each lunch out and then dinner back at villa. Think bugs are mostly related to weather/rain more than time of year.

Do buy trip insurance though, it's not that expensive compared to cost of the trip.

We always go October and as most have said, a lot less people...these have been some of our best trips and as mentioned above

Highly suggest trip insurance...

The water temp should be at 84, just right. No crowds, calmer water. My favorite time of year to go.
