Stopping for food on STT

Post by GotToGetAway »

I was considering stopping for food on STT (maybe Cost U Less) before heading to STJ. We are going with family this trip and will need food in larger supply than we are used to, so it may make sense to get more bulk items on STT and then fill in the rest on STJ.

My problem is once we do shopping on STT, the frozen/cold items may not last the final leg of the trip on the car barge and to the villa.

Are there any stores on STT that also sell coolers or something to keep the food cold? Or does someone else have a good suggestion?

We will be doing carry on only, so our space is limited for taking cooler with us on the plane.

Stopped there last week and I did see the insulated bags that you could buy. I want to say that they were about $5.

The insulated bags work well for the frozen food and are available at CostuLess - sometimes they even have some cheap Styrofoam coolers there - but if you pack all the frozen goods and perishables together, tightly in one of the cardboard boxes they have available they will certainly be fine all the way to STJ - keep them out of the sun, maybe run the AC in the car if you have a long wait - it won't work for ice cream but everything else should keep just fine.
If you are shopping for a family you will find the savings and variety are well worth the stop if you are renting a car in STT.

Thank you both.
Exit Zero- you always give wonderful advice. The box is definitely a great idea, though $5 for an insulated bag may be worth it depend on what we purchase. We are renting our vehicle on STT, I'm hoping we will have room since our luggage will be with us.
Do you think Cost U Less is a better choice or the market right before the ferry in Red Hook (the name eludes me right now)? We will definitely also pick up items on STJ, just wanted to get the larger/bulk items (cereal, frozen meat, tuna, yogurt, etc) on STT.
Thanks in advance!

CostuLess is far better than Marina Market - across from the Red hook Ferry - for the items you mentioned as well as drinks, frozen entrees, snacks, dairy, cheeses, etc.- they may not have the widest variety in some categories - but you could easily stock up for a group for a week there and have very few purchases to supplement with during your stay in STJ.
The butcher counter at Marina Market is very good and has some high quality items but don't hesitate to buy meat at CostuLess if they have what you are looking for. The cryovac whole Filet of beef at CUL is excellent and a bargain. So are the BBQ whole chickens at 6.95.
