BVI suggestions

Hi, all! I am new to this forum and was very excited to find it! We are making our first trip to St. John in May and cannot wait! One day we want to visit either Tortola or Jost Van Dyke, but we are unsure which we should go to. Can anyone give me suggestions as to which may be the better choice?

If you are looking to party, Jost is the place. I do not know too much about Tortola but I had a blast when I visited Jost earlier this month.

A day trip to Jost van Dyke can be a great time. I highly recommend it. I suggest taking the Kekoa from St John over to Jost. They stop at a few spots along the way and you won't be disappointed. Promise.

We have stayed on both Jost and Tortola. Both are gorgeous, but for just a day trip, go to Jost. The ferry lands in Great Harbor, but the real jewel, which will take your breath away is White Bay Beach. Tortola is way too big to go to for just a day, but if you decide to, Smuggler's Cove is the ticket, very hidden, few people.......

Take a day charter with Palm Tree Charters and you can see several BVI islands!! You check in at Sopers Hole, Tortola do a little shopping in the colorful wharf shops, then try Pirates Bight on Norman Island, Cooper Island for lunch, and end the day on Jost Van Dyke sipping on painkillers on gorgeous White Bay!!! I would agree with Jill on this one. A day on White Bay will be a highlight.

Tortola is great but you'd spend time getting around that you wouldn't need to do on JVD. Tortola would best be saved for an actual stay of several days.

The basic decision you have is to sail or to motor. The issue is you're fighting the trade winds on a day sail to BVI, so you can only really get to Jost if you sail. It's not cheap either way. In our opinion, it's better to motor to BVI because there's a lot of places to see and visit that you just can't do on a one day sail.......Norman, Indians, Sandy Spit, Foxy's, Soggy's, etc etc.

When we've sailed in the past, the day sails out of Cruz with Phil Chalker are awesome, there are super snorkel spots he can hit around that side of STJ/STT that are deserted and fun. If you really like to just sail, I'd recommend that.

If you really just want to get to Jost to hit Foxy's and White Bay, I think the Ferry is a great option.

The last thing you need to consider is how many of you will be on the boat. Many of the boats have a 6 person limit due to Coast Guard rules. If you have less, you still pay for 6? If you have more than 6, often you have do pay for up to 11 or 12.

These are great decisions to have, beats shoveling snow!

Have to agree with the Palm Tree Charters and our fav,Capt John. He will accommodate whatever you like to do and his sweetheart will take care of so much beforehand- they are a super pair!!! We always end at Soggy Dollar on Jost but they can help you plan the day!!
