St Kitts & Nevis ?
St Kitts & Nevis ?
Hello Everyboby- We're thinking about taking an adults only trip to St Kitts or Nevis this year and wondering if anyone has been there who could share their experience, perspective on pros & cons, and/or reccomendations?
Thanks in advance!

I'm encouraged by the value to be had on villas on Nevis during the summer....some really nice villas available for under $2k...that might offset the additional travel required to get there.

I looked at St. Kitts (but ended up going to Anguilla) and I watched this forum for a while -

Someone on the forum did a Nevis/STJ trip but I can't remember her user name. It was a year or two ago.

Hi Sherban
My hubby and I have been to St Kitts once and Nevis 3 times. We especially love Nevis, and plan to go back some year. We've been visiting STJ and the BVIs in recent years, so the last time we were on Nevis was in 2007. Here are a few thoughts. Feel free ask questions.
Nevis is small, quiet, laid back and very easy to drive around. The scenery with Mt Nevis in sight most places is so beautiful. The beaches are nice and the sand is darker color than on STJ, so the water color is a deep blue. There is very little snorkeling, so if you are an avid snorkeler, don't expect anything even close to STJ. We have taken a boat trip to reefs off of St Kitts and it had ok snorkeling. We have been hiking in the rainforest several times with a guide and its a really cool experience. Lots of excellent restaurants, and several with West Indian food, which we enjoy. We stayed at some of the small plantation inns, Mt Nevis hotel, and a place with cabins cantilevered over the water. We loved them all and would stay in any of them. The villas are tempting as they are fairly inexpensive compared to other islands. Some of them have a cook included - I would love that! There is a good grocery store and several local bakeries, so you can get stuff to fix at the villa, if you choose.
We loved St Kitts too. It has some beaches with little beach bar/cafes on the peninsula, with a little snorkeling off shore, (but not like St John). There is a huge historic fort up on a hill that is very well preserved and interesting to see. Nice views from there too. We enjoyed visiting a batik place where you can watch them make batik on the beautiful grounds of an old plantation. There is a huge Marriott on St Kitts, if you like that type of place. We stayed at a small hotel on Timothy Beach. St Kitts is not on our "go back" list at this time because unfortunately they have been having a lot of gang violence, including many murders since 2008. One article said the first two quarters of 2011 were 55% higher than 2010, so it may still be increasing. There have been shootings in the public square in town during the day. Its been in the news a lot as the government struggles to get it under control. You may want to see how its going. I haven't checked it in the past few months. Its very sad to hear about this, as we loved the island and would like to go back.
Happy Trip Planning!

Thanks so much for the info...the airfare from CLT is a bit outrageous but I really like the look and feel of the island...it is on the short list.
I also loove the idea of taking our kids to stay in a real sugar mill...what great history!

Been to Nevis often over the last few decades and it is still fairly quiet and laid back - the Four Seasons has changed it somewhat but the small guest houses are still unique and if you do find a villa rental I am sure it would be fine - it is easy to travel around with a rental car - a road basically circles the island at sea level - much different than STT//STJ -- town is small and the Sat. morning market is interesting -- some great beaches and small restaurants and bars - certainly not as Americanized as the VI and has a lot more West Indian feel throughout the island - some shore snorkeling but I have found good offshore snorkeling by boat too - the history and architecture is worth exploring -
St Kitts is really a lot bigger than Nevis and although I have visited a few times it has only been a few days at a time or by sailboat at anchor - very pretty scenery - great little town -Basseterre - outstanding old fortifications - a train ride through the sugar fields - some big sandy beaches both white and dark sand - the small guest houses I have been to were basic and may still exist but a lot of the new hotels are bigger and on the beaches - it is a big island easy to get around but it does take all day.

BJ- I agree I really want to stay there with my kids sometime...to share the history of the caribbean with them...what better way then to actually vacation in an old sugar mill!

I have been to St. Kitts. Others who have spoken up have more experience than I do, but I'll throw my 2 cents in. We stopped at St. Kitts on a cruise stop a year ago. We did a LOT in a day - rented a car, headed up to the fort, saw monkeys, toured Basseterre briefly and then hung out at Shipwreck's beach for the afternoon.
My impression: the island is physically beautiful. It is a combination of emerald, rolling hills, mountains and scrub. Depends where you are on the island. The people were honestly not overly friendly, and we're pretty respectful travelers. I don't know, it just didn't feel like someone I'd go back.
