Unless you are prone to cold, a sweater is probably not needed. The most versatile over-garment would be a light long sleeve cotton zip-up.

My problem with rashguards is that they are cold (evaporation) when you come out of the water.

I am here now. Don't post in this forum but I wanted to weigh in on this one. I have never been to St John....we are from Mississippi....where it's hot & humid most of the time. My hubs would say this weather is nice, great, perfect. I think it's chilly. I like HOT weather. In the sun, it's hot, not HOT. Depending on how much sun you've had that day, a cloud either brings needed shade for a few minutes, or more chilly time. Maybe I'm a wimp. And honestly there's nothing you can do about it. I'm not complaining, just telling you from my point of view. And the water....well...it's cold when you first get in. Bearable while snorkling, then time to get out. A little cold for me, but then again I like water temps like bath water. But it's good times here on the island.

We just got back Saturday night after 21 days in St John. When we first got there Jan 7th we both thought it was warmer than last year the same dates. The last week we thought the water temp was cooler. We always wore long sleeve rash guards for the sun protection and to snorkel in.

Last year at nights sometimes I wore a long sleeve shirt at night. This year I was never cold in the evening.

Thanks for the additional reports acdc and cindygad, seems like it's just on the border of possibly being cool, depending on personal tolerance. I have a rash guard, a 0.5mm long sleeve, and a 1.5mm long sleeve. Gonna bring all three and see which one works best. Sounds like one can definitely get a tan, and the sun is strong enough to make you want to jump in the water a few times during the day.

Hi all,

I'm visiting St. John In the middle of February this year. I'm coming from Boston, but have read some posts that it's been a little colder than usual down there. It seems most days just make it to 80 there, and the water temps are around 79. Are other tourists swimming / snorkeling? Are the north shore bays too rough for snorkeling? I'm starting to get a little worried that it'll be a bit chilly when I visit.

There's really not much I can do, even if the water is a little on the chilly side, a wet suit would probably be way overboard!

My wife is down there right now and the weather is great and the water is just fine. Feb is a great time to be on island. Have a great time

Im finally on the island, wanted to give my report! Made it to a trunk bay around 5:30 as tge sun was setting. Air temp definitely cooler than summer, sun can def still burn though! The water was also definitely chilly, at first touch had the reaction you get up in the northeast. Getting used to the temp goes very fast though. Today we'll be able to hit the beaches with the sun in full blast. Turquoise colors are pretty as usual. Roosters very loud so far
