day sail

Post by ellena »

We are going to go on a day sail and are looking for a boat where they would let my son assist in sailing. He sails in NYC. We are a group of 5-my husband , my self and 3 young adults, late 20's. We are choosing between Cloud 9 and Wayward Sailor at this point. Does anyone have a preference or want to recommend another boat?
Thank you very much for your help.We would likely just do a private charter.

Happy Holidays! Ellen

Ellen,
I've heard great stuff about the two boats you've already named, but don't have any personal experience with them. I can throw another sailboat at you where I'm sure they would let him help sail. I also think your group of young adults would mesh great with this boat's owners/crew. My suggestion for your consideration is Survivan. Jason & Larita (Lou) Carter live aboard and do both St John sails and Jost sails. They are a very fun couple and you'll have a great trip with them. We sailed with them in June '09, and may very well do so again this June. You can google them "St. John Yacht Charters" and Survivan. You'll have a blast whoever you choose.

Not to confuse the issue further, but another one that will let you help sail is Han on Sail Safaris- he has Hobies and also a few larger boats including the 40 ft Dell Rose. Han is great and I have sailed with him in the past. Here's his website:

We sailed with the Wayward Sailor last year. She has a capacity for 6 passengers. Although I would never speak for Captain Phil, I have to say that he is very serious about teaching. He will spend a good deal of time teaching about the VI and marine life. I can't imagine that he would object to your son assisting him under the captain's supervision. Send him an email and see what he says.

Have a great trip and get us a trip report.

We rented from Charlie Whittmore on the boat Simplicity http://www.simplicitycharters.com/crew_info.html last year and they let my husband and friend sail. It's based in St Thomas but came to St John (they have a dog that helps with the lines)

Thanks! I booked Hans-I requested him as a captain. He said he would try, but might get one of his other captains. He seems great!

Hi Ellena!

I've been on many day sails out of St John. Cloud Nine, Wayward Sailor, Spree, Kekoa, etc..
The Cloud Nine is a brand new boat only a couple of years old so that makes it very appealing over some of the other choices.
But as others have said, the Captain of Wayward is a very knowledgeable sailor and interesting.
If a day sail just to relax is what you truly want then I wouldn't hesitate to book a day on the Kekoa. It's my personal favorite. It's not a trip to learn to sail on though. It's just a great day sailing and visiting the BVI. On my blog I've posted som pictures of my day trip earlier this month.

Enjoy!
