Surprise Birthday Trip -Part 3
Surprise Birthday Trip -Part 3
Well, I finally had a little time to write the last installment of hubby’s surprise birthday trip. After a fabulous picnic lunch at the Baths (Devils Bay) with the perfect weather, perfect water temperature and the best food we were taken back to Little Dix to get ready for the birthday beach dinner.
At 7pm the concierge came to get us and walked us down to the beach. We had the whole beach to ourselves, with a beautiful table and tiki torches. The sun was just beginning to set and it was magical. We started with a tomato mozzarella salad. I then had a small filet and hubby had the ahi tuna both with a painkiller. For dessert we had little pastry puffs with caramel and apple and a birthday candle. It was a great way to end a 40th birthday in my opinion (hint, hint hubby, if you are reading
). We went back to the room and there was a bottle of champagne and a nice birthday card from the resort.
The next day we decided to take advantage of the Spa at the resort. I opted for the 2 hour massage while Ken got a men’s facial. I have never felt more relaxed and pampered. To lay there, get massaged and be able to listen to waves crashing below and the tropical birds was amazing. It was definitely worth the price. Once we were done with the Spa, we decided to be adventurous and rent a car and take a tour of the island. For $60 we had the car for 24 hours which worked out great. We drove the whole island stopping along the way to take in the scenery. We both commented that Virgin Gorda reminds us of how St. John used to be when we first started going down in 1995. It is a very quiet island and the people are just as nice. We went back to the resort and had our last dinner.
On Sunday, we didn’t have to get the ferry back to St. John until 3. So we ordered a picnic lunch and drove the Savannah Bay beach. This beach was just as amazing as the Baths. There are no boulders like at the Baths, but the beach is wide and we only saw one other couple way off in the distance. We enjoyed the lunch and headed back to pack up. We got the ferry and headed back to St. John to see Grammy, Poppy and our daughter Emma. We then spent two more days soaking in the sun at Maho before we had to head back home.
Since US Airways had messed our schedule up earlier in the year, we ended up taking a Cape Air flight over the San Juan and then going up to Charlotte. It was uneventful and Ken enjoyed the Cape Air flight since he flies similar planes. We got back to Charlotte and drove back up to his sisters to wait out the next tropical storm. While we were away, Tropical Storm Lee decided to park over Pennsylvania so we were once again dealing with flooding. We waited until Friday to drive home since we had to go I-81 through Virginia and Pennsylvania and all new reports indicated there were lots of roads closed. We made it home and then realized the trip I had been secretly planning since February was over. It is always sad coming home
and can’t wait to head back down…..hopefully sometime soon!
