We did get out! The hurricane was only a strong Cat 1 when it came about 75 miles from the shore by Wilmington at 3:30AM or so. It was quite scary for a few hours there! At 6AM, the fire alarms went off in the hotel. We were in a quandary: Do we go outside in 90 MPH winds or, stay in a burning building? Choices, choices. The hotel management announced over the PA system that we should stay put...then about 30 minutes later, gave us the all clear. Never did find out what that whole thing was about.
Funny/Strange things:
Avis called us and wanted to remind us that if anything happened to their vehicle, we were solely responsible for it. Thanks, guys.
Apparently hotel windows in this area are designed to "flex" in high winds. And flex they did! It was weird (read, scary) seeing windows bow in and out like that.
One of our teens essentially slept through the entire ordeal (including the fire alarm).
Ran into a young gal who was walking around like a zombie while we were experiencing the back end of the hurricane and she looked at us and said, "today is my wedding day."
Styrofoam coolers with duct tape are extremely effective. We were able to keep a lot of our food that we brought from the rental house cool for two days. Hot dog anyone?
The staff at the hotel was phenomenal. They kept their cool, they over staffed, they allowed their staff to bring their pets in Friday afternoon for the weekend...
We felt reassured when the US Coast guard docked their boat by our hotel and checked in for the weekend. If they thought this was THE safe place to be, we knew we were in the right place.
Wilmington is probably a really cute town. We didn't get to see much of it, but what we did see was nice.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for your helpful advice and, as always, your concern. We got home late last night and now, I am packing up to leave at 2AM to drive one of our kids back to college.
