Guy Benjamin

Post by rpplano »

Guy Benjamin's birthday is coming up on October 18th. I believe this is number 97! Anyone who has a chance, go visit him in Coral Bay. He enjoys the short visits and we are blessed each time we go by and talk with him. He's an education pioneer who has given his life to improving education in the VI's and especially St. John. He's still sharp and gracious to all. His escapades growing up in Coral Bay are pretty funny to hear.
His house is across the street from Skinny Legs. You will be glad you took the 15 minutes to meet him.
If you are lucky, he might have a copy of his biography to sign for you.

I,too,am a fan of Mr. Benjamin (or Benji as he likes to call himself) and call him every month or so just to keep in touch and to hear his wonderful voice. He is a warm, gracious man...a true patriarch of the island. Anyone who is interested in STJ history should get his book. It's like sitting at the feet of your granddad while he tells you stories of his youth.
I think it might be his 98th birthday coming up,but not sure. Either way, he has a lot of living to share and does so willingly. So when you're in Coral Bay, please stop by and pay your respects. You'll be glad you did.
Friends, they go away then they re-appear...I believe there is Magic here.

According to Theo Moorehead, his goddaughter, if he makes his 100th birthday, there will be a big, all-island celebration. I'm planning to be there if it happens. Should be really special!

Does anyone have an address for him? I would like to send a card for his birthday. It would be really cool if we could get many people to send him cards from all over. Any other VIOL members up for it?

My husband and I had the privilege of meeting him when we were there 2 yrs ago. It was definitely a highlight of our trip!! He was out of his book at the time but took our name and address....and wouldn't let us pay him in advance. Several weeks after we returned home, we received his book (he had signed it for us) in the mail. No bill or anything was included but we sent him a check to make sure his book and postage was covered.
We may just have to start planning now to be there at his celebration! What a special time that will be!
