Monsoon...and mini trip report from on island
Monsoon...and mini trip report from on island
Okay, been here since Saturday and we've only had two days of sun. It is downright monsooning as I type this sitting in Gallows Pt. lobby. We did get out yesterday on an Ocean Runner boat over to Jost/Ivan's and Willie T's. They stopped allowing people to jump off the top....too many injuries and apparently one death. The skies were totally clear yesterday.
So back to the rain, which is causing my stress from the last two weeks to return...the local's sisterns are full, even overflowing so it can stop now!! The Grand Bay parking garage is flooded. Looking out I can't even see the water which is only 100 ft. away. Everyone please pray for some sun for me for the next few days! Locals saying this is such strange weather. So envious of people coming next week!

Tina, good luck on the weather. I know how frustrating this can be. It looks like the weather has been downright crazy. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory on heavy rains and flooding - http://www.weather.gov/alerts/vi.html
Maybe I should bring rain gear? This will keep the parking lot at Salt Pond uncrowded.
Cheers, RickG

Tina - hoping for better weather for you a.s.a.p.!!!
As for crazy weather, I think it's crazy EVERYWHERE right now. Last night we were scared of tornados...yes, I said tornados (not hurricanes). I never remember tornados around here but since Katrina we have had a few devastating ones come through New Orleans. I thought they stayed in the mid-west!
Anyway, I hope the weather gets better for you soon!

Weather not really so strange
For short time "locals", this rainy weather may seem strange, but to people who have lived here for over 30 years, the months of April and/or May are known as the little rainy season. In 1978, after I had been here for 3 dry years, I was talking to Eleanor Gibney (a young girl at the time) and I mentioned how abnormal this monsoony weather was, and she said that being without rain in April or May was abnormal.
This year, the drought that we had from December to March seemed like the longest drought since 1995 (Hurrican Marilyn). Still, for locals, April rains mean the end of the winter drought. Cisterns need to be full to take you to September (or earlier as the case may be) when the rains come again.
