techni ice?
techni ice?
I just learned about this product from reading this forum! We are leaving for St. John on Saturday. Our plan has been to check a suitcase with frozen meats and other groceries wrapped in ice sheets/packs ...we have a freezer bag it will all go in. Has anyone done this? Is there somewhere we can purchase techni ice? I would actually much rather carry on the food, rather than check it. It will take us about 13 hours to get from home to our villa...without any delays. I am worried that all of our food might spoil.. What do you all think?

Hi emmarose! Welcome to the forum. Technice is awesome! I'm not sure how well TSA clears it for carry-on though. Some people have had success, and I'm sure others will post their experiences with it. We used it in a checked cooler and it worked great to keep everything cold. It was a cheap-o rolling cooler so I was very pleased with the results of the Technice.
You can buy it on Amazon.com and other places as well. Here is their website: http://www.dryicepacks.com/Scripts/default.asp

Is there a way for the forum to always benefit from us buying stuff on Amazon?
I actually almost bought some Techni Ice but decided against it after reading the reviews, however, I buy enough stuff from Amazon to keep a small nation running so I'd love to support the forum if I could.

How does the technice work?
I bought a polar cooler and used it to go sailing over the weekend (in NY, not the VI}. The technice didn't work too well at keeping our beer cool. I squished it under water (as the directions say) and froze it. Did I do something wrong?

Did you let it completely puff up so each cell was like a little pillow before you froze it?inuny wrote:I squished it under water (as the directions say) and froze it. Did I do something wrong?

Sorry to hear about the beer, that would be very disappointing!California Girl wrote:Did you let it completely puff up so each cell was like a little pillow before you froze it?inuny wrote:I squished it under water (as the directions say) and froze it. Did I do something wrong?
You must have not activated/soaked/scrunched the sheets enough. The cells are filled with crystals/pellets that soak up water.
Properly soaked and scrunched (and scrunched and scrunched) it will puff up dramatically.
I am glad I read, on this forum, about how long it takes to properly "inflate" it. I really had to work at it.
Once it is done, it holds the water forever. I am still using sheets from 2007. They look a little ratty in spots but being that they never truly thaw out, they work just fine.
I'm addicted to techni ice. I bring a couple of non-activated sheets with me to STJ and activate them when I get there and just leave them. The colder the sheets are the better, our freezer is set at -10F. They also do well for long-term cooler storage for our camping trips - I leave them on top of the other goods and ice and they act as an extra layer of cold insulation even after they are unfrozen.
